About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Worker 3, specifically assigned to tree care within the Grounds Department. This role involves performing landscape and garden duties, operating various hand and power tools, and adhering to ANSI Standards for tree care, pruning, fertilization, planting, and removal. The position requires a willingness to work at heights, climb trees, and learn proper knot tying for safety. The incumbent will be responsible for acquiring knowledge in tree safety, tree rescue, and herbicide/fertilizer application. A valid State of Nevada Driver's license is mandatory, and employees must obtain forklift and man lift operator licenses within 11 months of hire.

Requirements

  • Must have a working knowledge of gardening and landscape methods, techniques, material, and equipment.
  • Must have a working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in grounds tree service work.
  • Ability to safely and properly operate a wide variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Must become familiar with power equipment such as chain saws, stump grinders, limb chippers, and dump trucks.
  • Applicants must be willing to work above ground and climb trees at precarious heights.
  • Applicants must be willing to learn proper knot tying for safety.
  • Employees must possess and maintain a valid State of Nevada Driver’s license.
  • Employees must obtain forklift operator and man lift operator licenses by 11 month evaluation of hire and maintain throughout employment with the University.

Nice To Haves

  • ISA Certification is preferable.
  • One year of experience performing grounds maintenance work using a variety of tools, equipment, and techniques; OR six months of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Responsibilities

  • Perform landscape, garden, and greenhouse duties such as planting, pruning, mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, weeding, and snow and ice removal.
  • Operate hand and power tools, power mowers, tractor mowers, trenching devices, forklifts, and hoists.
  • Work with the Grounds Department assigned to tree care and follow ANSI Standards for tree care, pruning, fertilization, planting, and removal.
  • Work above ground and climb trees at precarious heights.
  • Learn proper knot tying for safety.
  • Acquire and meet standards regarding knowledge of tree safety, tree rescue, and herbicide and fertilizer application.
  • Obtain forklift operator and man lift operator licenses by the 11-month evaluation of hire and maintain them throughout employment.
