About The Position

Maintains athletic fields, parks, municipal buildings, irrigation systems, equipment, and pool facilities. The position works under the general supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. Duties also include safety classes, playground maintenance, employee updates, description summaries, weekly reports, and cemetery records. The employee must work well with others, maintain a pleasant attitude, follow directions, communicate effectively with citizens, and attend work regularly and on time. The employee must be willing to work on call as needed, including on a 24-hour basis, and may be assigned after-hours work, often related to special events. Other duties may be assigned, and duties may change according to the employer’s needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• One to three months of related experience operating light equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Valid state driver's license or ability to obtain one.
• Knowledge of basic landscaping techniques.
• Ability to follow routine instructions and work without supervision, completing tasks in a timely manner.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos, and to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small-group situations to customers, clients, and coworkers.
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculate rates, ratios, and percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
• Ability to use Parks and Recreation equipment, power tools, vehicles, and other items effectively and safely.
• Ability to work well with others and maintain a pleasant attitude.
• Ability to communicate effectively with citizens and follow directions.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including frequently lifting, carrying, and positioning objects weighing up to 100 pounds; working in tiring or uncomfortable positions; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, stretching, and climbing; and constant standing on hard surfaces.
• Ability to perform required work around moving mechanical parts, outdoors in varied weather, and in wet or humid conditions.

Responsibilities

• Maintain parks and athletic fields by mowing, trimming, and edging turf areas, preparing athletic fields for use, providing landscaping as assigned, and picking up trash.
• Maintain municipal building grounds by mowing grass, maintaining landscapes and irrigation systems, and picking up trash.
• Ensure tools and equipment are accounted for.
• Communicate effectively and work with citizens who may have complaints about services provided.
• Follow directions and perform other duties needed for successful department operations.
• Attend work regularly and on time.
• Work on call as needed, including on a 24-hour basis, and perform after-hours work as assigned.
• Maintain playgrounds and pool facilities, and perform tasks related to safety classes, employee updates, description summaries, weekly reports, and cemetery records.
