About The Position

The Grossing Technician performs duties according to the laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), supporting a culture of compliance and safety through careful, accurate, and professional work. The role includes gross examination and preparation of small, uncomplicated skin specimens for diagnostic evaluation, such as shaves, punches, and excisions. The technician reviews specimens for completeness and correct patient and site identification; selects appropriate processing times and special procedures; and troubleshoots technical issues involving methods, techniques, and instrumentation. Additional duties include instrument maintenance and quality control, maintaining a safe work environment, monitoring supplies and inventory, and performing other histology work—such as embedding, microtomy, and block or slide filing—after completing applicable SOP training. The position also supports implementation and monitoring of quality-control and quality-assurance policies. The role requires the specified laboratory-science education or equivalent coursework and training. Applicable SOP and laboratory-compliance training and a post-training assessment must be completed before laboratory work begins. A competency assessment is required before independent work, and technicians complete 12 hours of continuing education annually, along with required new-hire, annual, and SOP-update training. Licensure and certification are not required. The position operates in a professional laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemical, hazardous, and biological samples. It uses standard office equipment and may require travel of up to 25% from the employee’s home office. The work includes standing, walking, sitting for extended periods, computer use, and handling or reaching with the hands and arms; lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
