About The Position

Wingate University is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the coaching staff, primarily focusing on defensive backs. This role involves assisting with coaching, practice and game preparation, film breakdown, recruiting, student-athlete development, and administrative duties. Wingate University is a rapidly growing independent university with over 3,400 students across two campuses, committed to an inclusive and welcoming environment. The main campus is situated on over 500 acres, just 25 minutes from Charlotte, NC.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Admission into a Wingate University graduate program.
  • Knowledge of defensive back techniques and strategies.
  • Ability to effectively teach and communicate football concepts.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with film breakdown and scouting techniques.
  • Understanding of NCAA recruiting rules.
  • Ability to work effectively with student-athletes and coaching staff.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive team culture and supporting student-athlete development.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous coaching experience at the collegiate or high school level.
  • Experience with recruiting operations.
  • Proficiency in football analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coaching defensive backs fundamentals and techniques, including man coverage, zone coverage, press coverage, eye discipline, leverage, tackling, pursuit angles, and route recognition.
  • Conduct individual and group drills during practice, and assist with turnover circuit and ball skill development.
  • Organize practice drills and defensive periods, prepare scout team cards and practice scripts, and set up drills, cones, bags, and equipment.
  • Manage practice organization and tempo, and assist with game-day sideline communication and adjustments.
  • Break down opponent passing concepts and formations, analyze tendencies, and prepare scouting reports and film cut-ups.
  • Assist with opponent third-down, red zone, and situational analysis, and evaluate defensive back performance through film review.
  • Assist with recruiting operations and prospect evaluations, organize recruiting film and databases, and communicate with prospective student-athletes.
  • Help coordinate official and unofficial visits, and assist during camps, clinics, and recruiting events.
  • Support student-athlete academic accountability and mentorship, encourage leadership, discipline, and professionalism, and monitor attendance, player engagement, and development progress.
  • Assist in reinforcing team culture and standards.
  • Organize playbooks, scouting materials, and meeting presentations, and assist with equipment and meeting room setup.
  • Maintain recruiting records and compliance documentation, and help coordinate travel logistics when assigned.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Head Coach or Defensive Staff.
