About The Position

Hunter Contracting Co. is seeking a Grade Checker to set grade stakes that guide earth-moving equipment operators in grading roads, highways, and fill embankments. The role involves interpreting construction and survey information, measuring and marking excavation references, and observing earthwork to verify that it follows the stake references. The Grade Checker must follow safety procedures and work accurately to construction standards.

Requirements

At least two years of experience in construction operations, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of structures, highways, or roads.
Ability to understand construction plans and follow field instructions.
Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and judge distances and slopes accurately.
Ability to prioritize work to meet goals or deadlines.
Good safety habits and pride in craftsmanship.

Responsibilities

Read and understand blueprints, sketches, building plans, and drawings.
Set grade stakes to guide earth-moving equipment operators in sloping roads and fill embankments, using measuring instruments and hand tools.
Read survey stakes along the right-of-way to determine grade specifications for embankments.
Measure horizontally and vertically, in the specified ratio, from survey stakes to the juncture of the embankment and initial excavation, using a survey rod and eye level.
Set grade stakes and chalk-mark excavation reference points on stakes.
Repeat measuring and staking at specified intervals to form a horizontal stake line.
Observe excavation activities to verify conformance to stake references and notify equipment operators or a supervisor of deviations.
Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
