GPU Compiler Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

The Apple GPU Software team develops languages, compiler transformations, and developer tools that give developers access to the GPU across Apple products. Metal provides near-direct access to the GPU, giving developers more control of the hardware and enabling them to take advantage of Apple silicon. The GPU Compiler Engineer will analyze, design, and build language constructs and compiler optimizations for GPU applications. The role involves investigating new architectures; developing high-quality static and JIT front-end and middle-end optimizations; and integrating compilers into Apple’s developer platform. Applications include games, machine learning, compute, graphics, and image processing. The engineer will collaborate with teams across Apple, including hardware technology, GPU driver, and framework teams, to develop feature roadmaps and maximize performance across Apple platforms.

Requirements

  • Technical BS/MS degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience in compiler development.
  • Deep understanding of compilers, including semantic analysis, type systems, and optimization algorithms.
  • Strong foundation in computer architecture, including memory hierarchy, instructions, and other modern processors.
  • Excellent software design, problem-solving, debugging, and performance-analysis skills.
  • Understanding of a parallel programming language for GPUs or CPUs, such as Metal, OpenGL, OpenCL, DirectX, or CUDA.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with machine learning and frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Familiarity with graphics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and architect language features and intermediate representations (IR) to represent features of new architectures and enable advanced optimizations.
  • Research and design compiler optimization algorithms for general-purpose compute, machine learning, and graphics-specific code paths.
  • Build developer-focused compiler-based tools and infrastructure.
  • Investigate new architectures and develop language designs and static and JIT front-end and middle-end optimizations.
  • Integrate compilers into the developer platform to improve performance for machine learning, compute, and graphics applications across Apple products.
