GPU Compiler Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple's GPU Software team develops languages, compiler technology, and developer tools that help developers use the GPU across Apple products. The team works on language constructs, compiler transformations, and tools for Apple hardware. Metal provides developers with near-direct access to the GPU and control over the hardware, enabling them to use Apple Silicon. The GPU Compiler Engineer will analyze, design, and build language constructs and front-end and middle-end compiler optimizations. The role involves investigating new architectures, designing languages, and developing static and just-in-time (JIT) optimizations for applications including games, machine learning, and image processing. The engineer will collaborate with teams across Apple, including hardware technology, GPU driver, and framework teams, and help integrate compilers into the developer platform to improve performance for machine learning, compute, and graphics across Apple products.

Requirements

  • Technical bachelor's or master's degree, or equivalent experience, in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; alternatively, equivalent professional experience in compiler development.
  • Deep understanding of compilers, including semantic analysis, type systems, and optimization algorithms.
  • Strong foundation in computer architecture, including memory hierarchy, instructions, and modern processors.
  • Excellent software design, problem-solving, debugging, and performance-analysis skills.
  • Passion for language design, compilation techniques, and GPUs, and understanding of how to help developers maximize GPU performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of a parallel programming language for GPUs or CPUs, such as Metal, OpenGL, OpenCL, DirectX, or CUDA.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Familiarity with graphics.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, and build new language constructs in compiler front ends.
  • Develop front-end and middle-end compiler optimizations, including static and JIT optimizations.
  • Investigate new architectures and design languages for GPU development.
  • Integrate compilers into Apple's developer platform.
  • Collaborate with engineers and partner teams to develop tools and languages for graphics, compute, and machine learning applications.
  • Work with hardware technology, GPU driver, and framework teams on feature roadmaps.
  • Optimize performance for applications across Apple platforms.
