Compiler Toolchain Engineer

Qualcomm•Austin, TX
•$123,700 - $185,500

About The Position

Qualcomm Compiler Toolchain Software Engineers design and develop compiler and programming tools that enable efficient, energy-conscious code execution on Qualcomm hardware. The role offers design autonomy and the opportunity to work with compiler technologies supporting application domains including gaming, image processing, virtual and augmented reality, machine learning, and modem. Engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance software for mobile and compute products. The engineer works with processor architectures and systems concepts to develop compilers, debuggers, linkers, profilers, simulators, and other tools. The role includes building and running benchmarks, analyzing performance and power data, and applying programming-language, algorithmic, optimization, and intermediate-representation techniques to improve compilation and hardware efficiency. The position works independently with minimal supervision, provides guidance to team members, and may influence decisions beyond the immediate work group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and 4 or more years of Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience; or a master's degree in one of these fields and 3 or more years of such experience; or a PhD in one of these fields and 2 or more years of such experience.
  • At least 2 years of combined academic and/or work experience with compilers or tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Use knowledge of software development, processor architecture, debugging and recovery techniques, and systems concepts to enhance application domains for mobile and compute products.
  • Incorporate complex features into programming tools to help developers implement, debug, and optimize code running on programmable cores.
  • Design and develop industry-standard tools such as debuggers, linkers, profilers, converters, and optimizers.
  • Build complex bit-exact functional or timing-accurate simulators that enable off-target software execution.
  • Synthesize and run benchmarks for complex applications; analyze data and provide feedback on performance, power optimization, and constraint management.
  • Design and write compiler toolchains, such as LLVM, GCC, MLIR, Halide, or TVM, to ensure efficient compilation for hardware architectures.
  • Apply mathematical techniques in programming languages, algorithms, and optimization, and use data structures and heuristics to improve performance, power efficiency, and compilation tractability.
  • Apply advanced program intermediate representations to expose optimization opportunities.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and provide supervision or guidance to other team members.
  • Communicate complex information verbally and in writing, and plan, solve problems, and prioritize tasks.

Benefits

  • Competitive annual discretionary bonus program.
  • Opportunity for annual RSU grants; employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for the annual bonus.
  • Competitive benefits package designed to support employees at work, at home, and at play.
