About The Position

This position is in the Division of State Lands’ Bureau of Survey and Mapping’s Statewide Geodetic Survey Control Section. The Division of State Lands serves as Florida’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship, providing oversight for the management of activities on more than 12 million acres of public lands. This role is crucial for ensuring Florida's public lands are protected and conserved, allowing residents and visitors to experience the state's unique landscapes. The Bureau of Survey and Mapping plays a key role in this mission through its geodetic survey control efforts.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Tide gauges; tidal marks; Global Navigation Satellite System; geodetic control surveying; mapping terminology; principles; tools; instruments; and techniques.
  • Skilled in: Using and operating tide gauges; geodetic control surveying instruments and equipment; preparing maps; operating a personal computer.
  • Ability to: Analyze and interpret geodetic control surveying data; determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments; communicate technical information verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures; perform technical surveying tasks; demonstrate teamwork; carry 30 pounds of survey equipment while walking in excess of 7 miles per day; lift and carry 80 pound bags of concrete and participate in the construction of concrete survey geodetic control marks; and travel and work eight 10-hour days in a row.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct organizational studies and evaluations on office procedures providing technical assistance and developing procedures to assist the Bureau of Survey and Mapping to operate more efficiently and effectively.
  • Coordinate and assist the field crew as needed for establishing geodetic survey control, tide gauges, and tidal marks in accordance with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service, National Geodetic Survey (NGS), and Center for Operational Oceanographic Products throughout the State of Florida.
  • Collect the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s water level observing station data needed to meet the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products’ required observed water level data and the supporting metadata and documents for station installation, site visits for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and station removal as specified.
  • Ensure compliance with document 5.5.1.1_CO- PS_Coastal_Water_Level_Stations_Requirements_for_Documentation_and_Deliverables (pdf) or the latest requirements.
  • Collect GPS observations and participate in geodetic leveling to tide gauges and tidal marks around the State of Florida.
  • Install, maintain, and remove tide gauges along the coast of Florida for the determination of tidal datums.
  • Prepare, submit, and review Sunshine 811 Internet Ticket Entry in preparation of NGS 3-Dimensional Rod Mark setting.
  • Coordinate and assist in the recovery and construction of geodetic survey control marks.
  • Track and report the status of the Geodetic Survey Section’s materials and equipment used for establishing geodetic control, tide gauges, and tidal marks.
  • Perform mathematical computations and use NGS’s Geodetic Software for performing and processing geodetic control survey data.
  • Coordinate and assist in the writing of descriptions of geodetic survey control marks to be submitted to the National Geodetic Survey and National Ocean Service.
  • Operate and maintain land and waterborne vehicles.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
