About The Position

Reporting to the Customs and Compliance Manager, the Global Classification Lead will lead product classification across global markets, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, tariff schedules, and trade requirements. This role serves as the organization's subject matter expert in Harmonized System (HS) classification. It calls for strong analytical skills, the technical ability to understand complex products and engineering specifications, close attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced international environment.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in customs classification, trade compliance, and international customs operations
  • Expert knowledge of the Harmonized System (HS) and experience applying classification rules
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent internal and external stakeholder management abilities
  • Methodical and diligent with excellent planning skills
  • Proficient in using the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Fluent in French and English, both verbal and written (this role requires interaction with our international collaborators and customers)

Responsibilities

  • Classify products under the Harmonized System (HS) while ensuring compliance with applicable customs regulations
  • Analyze and interpret customs regulations, tariff schedules, customs rulings, Explanatory Notes, and classification requirements to support accurate and compliant tariff classification decisions
  • Apply the Harmonized System General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs), WCO Explanatory Notes, and customs rulings to determine tariff classifications
  • Analyze technical specifications, engineering drawings, bills of materials, product compositions, manufacturing processes, product functionality, and technical literature to determine accurate HS classifications
  • Maintain comprehensive classification records, supporting documentation, classification rationales, customs rulings, and regulatory references to ensure audit readiness
  • Review and validate HS codes and related customs attributes within ERP systems and product master data to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Monitor and assess changes to tariff schedules and communicate potential impacts to stakeholders
  • Identify classification risks, compliance gaps, and opportunities for improvement, recommending corrective actions where necessary
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve customs classification procedures, work instructions, classification databases, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Take part in cross-functional projects involving new products, product changes, acquisitions, market expansions, and regulatory initiatives to ensure customs classification requirements are considered
  • Review classifications for new product launches and product changes to ensure accurate tariff treatment before import or export
  • Prepare, submit, and manage requests for advance rulings, binding rulings, and classification determinations with customs authorities when needed
  • Perform other related duties as required to support the organization's customs compliance and trade compliance objectives
