About The Position

The Boeing Company’s Defense, Space & Security organization is seeking an experienced or lead Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) Adaptation Data Systems Engineer to support System Application Engineering activities in Huntington Beach, California; Bath, Maine; or Pascagoula, Mississippi. The geographically distributed GEDMS team designs and sustains ship-wide network system variants with ruggedized switching, routing, and message/signal processing equipment for U.S. Navy and foreign ships. The role integrates shipboard user systems—including Combat System, Navigation, Steering, Damage Control, and Machinery Control—with the GEDMS network, and supports the evolution of secure GEDMS architecture applications for existing and new user systems. Work includes requirements derivation, use cases, functional analysis, design, configuration documentation, and Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants. The engineer performs and manages high-visibility tasks assigned by the U.S. Navy, coordinates with internal and external team members, and communicates with the customer. This is a hybrid position requiring some onsite work at one of the listed locations, at the hiring team’s discretion. The selected candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance; an interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance is required after starting. U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance, and the position also requires a U.S. Person under export-control rules. The employer will not sponsor employment visas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a non-U.S. equivalent qualification directly related to the work.
  • At least 3 years of experience in real-time, near real-time, or embedded systems.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; an interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance is required after starting, and U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.

Nice To Haves

  • For Lead (Level 4): 5 or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy shipboard user systems, signal/interface types, and messaging.
  • Experience with U.S. Navy shipboard network systems and knowledge of information sources such as sensors, inertial navigation systems, controlled devices, and control consoles, including the data they provide and require and their interfaces.
  • Experience with controlled engineering processes, such as ECPs and SCDs, and integration documentation, such as TDPs, ICDs, and block or wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to communicate with technical personnel across multiple skill areas and functions to evaluate technical information and issues affecting design, production, and product, service, or deliverable support.
  • Ability to understand system-wide relationships and how changes in one area affect another.
  • Ability to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; and develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate sources.
  • Experience evaluating customer or operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and ensure compatibility of physical, functional, and program interfaces.
  • Experience developing, planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring requirements management processes and tools, risk and issue management, opportunity management, and technology readiness assessment processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including developing documentation for peer review and formal release.
  • Ability to create clear and concise manuals, release notes, white papers, and IDDs from engineering and network information.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain system configuration information in databases used to generate Application Data files or kits (ADkits) for configuring internal networks for U.S. and foreign Navy shipsets, strategic land-based sites, and laboratory sites.
  • Coordinate with the U.S. Navy In-Service Engineering Agent and other team members to develop ADkit tool sets and databases.
  • Generate ADkits and provide remote support to Field Engineers loading kits on shipboard networks.
  • Generate, maintain, and configuration-manage documentation, including Interface Design Documents (IDDs), to capture system interface design decisions.
  • Analyze and recommend interface characteristics between GEDMS and shipboard user systems for incorporation into IDDs, using models, desktop simulations, and other methods as required.
  • Process Impact Statements defining the impacts of adding or modifying users communicating over GEDMS.
  • Participate in user system integration working groups to define system interface requirements and definitions.
  • Collaborate with software developers to determine and document data formats and algorithms required by the operational user community.
  • Coordinate ongoing activities with internal and external team members and communicate with the customer.
  • Provide Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enroll in benefit programs generally including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Relocation may be offered based on candidate eligibility; basic relocation is offered for eligible internal candidates.
