About The Position

The Boeing Company’s Defense, Space & Security organization is seeking an Experienced or Lead Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) Adaptation Data Systems Engineer to support System Application Engineering activities in Huntington Beach, California; Bath, Maine; or Pascagoula, Mississippi. The GEDMS team is geographically distributed and designs and sustains ship-wide network system variants, including ruggedized switching, routing, and message/signal processing equipment, for U.S. Navy and foreign ships, as well as strategic land-based and laboratory sites. The role supports integration of shipboard user systems—including combat, navigation, steering, damage control, and machinery control systems—with GEDMS networks. Work includes evolving secure GEDMS architecture applications for existing and new systems; deriving requirements; developing use cases and functional analyses; supporting design and configuration documentation; and providing Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants. The engineer will coordinate with internal and external team members and communicate with the customer. This is a hybrid position requiring some onsite work at one of the listed locations. The amount of onsite work is at the hiring team’s discretion and may change. The position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance; an interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance is required after starting. U.S. export-control compliance requirements also apply. The employer will not sponsor applicants for employment visa status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a non-U.S. equivalent qualification directly related to the work statement.
  • At least 3 years of experience in real-time, near real-time, or embedded systems.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government for clearance eligibility. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance is required post-start.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person, as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62.
  • Must satisfy the Company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • For Lead Level 4: 5 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy shipboard user systems, signal/interface types, and messaging.
  • Experience with U.S. Navy shipboard network systems and knowledge of information sources such as sensors, inertial navigation systems, controlled devices, and control consoles, including the data they provide and require and their interfaces.
  • Experience with controlled engineering processes, such as ECPs and SCDs, and documentation such as TDPs, ICDs, and block or wiring diagrams required to integrate shipboard systems.
  • Ability to communicate with technical personnel across multiple skill areas and functions to evaluate technical information and issues affecting design, production, and support of products, services, or other deliverables.
  • Ability to understand system-wide relationships among positions and activities and the effects that changes in one area may have on another.
  • Ability to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; and develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.
  • Experience evaluating customer or operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and assure compatibility of physical, functional, and program interfaces.
  • Experience developing, planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring requirements management processes, tools, risk and issue management, opportunity management, and technology readiness assessment processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills and experience developing documentation for peer review and formal release.
  • Ability to create clear, concise manuals, release notes, white papers, and IDDs from engineering and network information.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain system configuration information in databases used to generate Application Data files or kits (ADkits) for configuring internal networks for U.S. and foreign Navy shipsets, strategic land-based sites, and laboratory sites.
  • Coordinate with the U.S. Navy In-Service Engineering Agent and other team members to develop ADkits tool sets and databases.
  • Generate ADkits and provide distance support to Field Engineers loading kits onto shipboard networks.
  • Generate, maintain, and configuration-manage documentation, such as Interface Design Documents (IDDs), to capture system interface design decisions.
  • Analyze and recommend interface characteristics between GEDMS and shipboard user systems, using models, desktop simulations, or other methods, for inclusion in IDDs.
  • Process Impact Statements defining the impacts of adding or modifying users communicating over GEDMS.
  • Participate in user system integration working groups to define system interface requirements and definitions.
  • Collaborate with software developers to determine and document data formats and algorithms required by the operational user community.
  • Support System Application Engineering activities, including integration of shipboard user systems with GEDMS and the evolution of secure GEDMS architecture applications.
  • Provide Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants and coordinate activities with internal and external team members and the customer.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in benefit programs generally including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Relocation assistance for eligible candidates; basic relocation is offered for eligible internal candidates.
