About The Position

Spicer Group is seeking an Intern I, II, III, or IV for its Geospatial Service Line. The intern will work alongside experienced surveyors and project teams, assisting with basic tasks appropriate to their experience level. This hands-on role combines office assignments with supervised field activities and provides exposure to GIS mapping, land surveying, mobile data collection, drone mapping, mobile LiDAR, 3D laser scanning, and GIS analytics. It is intended to connect classroom learning with practical applications and build geospatial skills progressively over the course of the internship. Interns may develop skills in AutoCAD and GIS mapping, Excel, survey equipment setup and operation, differential leveling, survey fundamentals, topographic and boundary surveying, project control, and construction staking. More advanced internship years may include traverse adjustments, GPS and level-data post-processing, remote-sensing technologies, processing remote-sensing data, and ground-truthing and validating those data. Duties may also include other reasonable assignments not specifically listed. Spicer Group is a multidisciplinary engineering, surveying, and planning company with offices in Michigan, Ohio, and Georgia. The company describes its core values as commitment to growth, strong client relationships, excellent services and solutions, teamwork, and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surveyors and project teams with basic geospatial service-line tasks appropriate to the intern’s experience level.
  • Develop AutoCAD skills, including processing topographic and boundary surveys, CAD cleanup, and data checks.
  • Develop GIS mapping skills, including converting CAD files to GIS maps, creating geodatabases, entering attribute data, and converting GIS files to CAD for field stakeout.
  • Use Excel for sorting, filtering, data entry, and calculations that support field work.
  • Learn to set up and operate surveying equipment, including levels, total stations, GNSS base and rover equipment, and related accessories.
  • Learn differential leveling procedures, participate in level loops, and perform computations and reduction of level notes.
  • Apply survey fundamentals, including measurement units, coordinate systems, and the Public Land Survey System.
  • Progress to independently performing topographic mapping with GNSS equipment and applying detailed topographic mapping techniques.
  • Prepare field notes for topographic and boundary surveys.
  • Learn project control establishment methods using GPS observations, total stations, leveling, and control-point placement.
  • Learn construction staking and layout techniques, including stake placement, grading plans, elevation transfer, and stake writing.
  • Learn about traverse closures and distributing error using least squares or compass rule.
  • Post-process raw GPS and level data to obtain final control values.
