Geoscience Data (Early Career) - 6-month term

BHP Career Portal
CA$69,000 - CA$86,000Hybrid

About The Position

The Geoscience Data (Early Career) contributes to the preparation of geoscience datasets for ingestion into BHP’s data platform, with a focus on legacy data remediation, metadata generation, and data structuring. In this role, you will apply foundational knowledge of geoscience data, metadata, and data management practices to support ingestion activities. You will review and remediate legacy geoscience datasets to align with defined ingestion requirements, with guidance from data managers and SMEs. You will also generate, standardize, and validate metadata for datasets with incomplete or missing information, and organize and structure datasets to meet ingestion-ready criteria, including resolving file structure, format, and projection issues. You will work through assigned dataset queues, progressing datasets from staging or legacy repositories toward an ingestion-ready state. Additionally, you will identify data quality issues and inconsistencies, escalating where interpretation or decision-making is required. You will document data issues, remediation steps, and metadata decisions to support traceability and consistency. Finally, you will collaborate with geoscience data and technology teams to support ingestion delivery and data quality improvement, and contribute to the consistent application of data standards, supporting improved discoverability and usability of geoscience data.

Requirements

  • 1–4 years of experience in geoscience, geophysics, or geoscience data-related work
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured datasets in an academic, internship, or early-career setting
  • Exposure to data preparation, data quality, or metadata capture activities
  • Familiarity with GIS or geoscience software environments (e.g., ArcGIS, Oasis montaj)
  • Experience working with large or incomplete datasets and applying structured approaches to resolve issues
