Genetics Counselor II - Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Genetic Predisposition Clinic - Full Time
About The Position
This full-time position in the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Genetic Predisposition Clinic provides comprehensive genetic counseling and testing to patients. The role involves interpreting clinical and laboratory findings, communicating them to patients and providers, and researching genetic disorders. The Genetic Counselor will assess psychosocial situations, offer support, educate patients on medical procedures for informed consent, and refer families to community resources. They will also coordinate with laboratory providers for genetic testing and evaluation, participate in multidisciplinary clinic meetings as the genetics expert, and provide education to healthcare professionals. Additionally, the role includes participating in quality improvement projects, developing and presenting genetics education programs, and mentoring new team members.
Requirements
- Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and licensure in the state in which teammate practices.
- Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling Accredited program.
- 3-9 years of experience required
- Knowledge of federal, state and municipal laws, regulation and standards that may impact the delivery of services for genetics.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people under stressful circumstances with diplomacy and tact.
- Excellent organizational and presentation skills.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Basic computer skills including the use of computer applications.
Responsibilities
- Provides comprehensive genetic counseling and testing to patients including interpreting clinical/laboratory findings and conveying them to patients and providers
- Researches information regarding a particular disorder and relays clinical/genetic information in a meaningful way.
- Assesses psychosocial situations and offers support.
- Educates patients regarding the risks and benefits of specific medical procedures so that they can provide informed consent.
- Refers families to other resources in the community, state or country when necessary and maintains client contact for follow up.
- Works directory with laboratory providers in ordering necessary genetic or related tests, and evaluates the test results once received. Coordinates with non-ACL labs to arrange for reference testing and other services not provided by ACL
- Participates in multidisciplinary or specialty clinic meetings and projects as the genetics expert.
- Provides education to physicians and allied health professionals
- Participates in a division level improvement project(s) benefitting patient care and the provision of genetics services
- Participates in the development and presentation of genetics educations programs for genetic counselors, physicians, other health professionals and lay populations.
- Serves as a mentor/coach for new team members including Entry level genetic counselor and Genetic Counselor I.
