About The Position

A Genetic Counseling Assistant performs routine clerical and clinical tasks within the clinic, assisting Physicians and Licensed Genetic Counselors to provide quality patient care efficiently and cost effectively. The Genetic Counseling Assistant functions under the supervision and licensure of the Physician, Advanced Practice Clinician, and/or Genetic Counselor within the clinical setting.

Requirements

  • Experience in a health care setting
  • Clerical or customer service experience

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic clerical and office duties, including assembling necessary documents and supplies, using computer applications, scheduling and coordinating appointments and testing, maintaining medical records, and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Accurately documents patient and family genetic history and vital information into the medical record.
  • Communicates with patients and providers via telephone, fax, e-mail, and U.S. mail.
  • Performs business and financial duties including assigning procedural and diagnostic coding, conducting pre-authorizations and referrals, and facilitating timely billing.
  • Processes patient referrals to genetic counseling and coordinates referrals to other specialties and providers.
  • Prioritizes patient scheduling to identify emergent needs.
  • Schedules appointment times and sends introductory packets to patients.
  • Prepares patient records by obtaining genetic and medical history and generating a pedigree for the genetic counselor.
  • Provides patient education as directed and documents the education.
  • Assists genetic counselor during genetic counseling sessions with paperwork, preauthorizations, and pedigrees.
  • Preauthorizes patients for genetic testing, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of genetic testing criteria for various insurance companies.
  • Works with laboratories and insurance companies to facilitate genetic testing.
  • Coordinates incorporation of patient information into the electronic medical record.
  • Tracks and reports testing results to genetic counselors.
  • Tracks patient information, genetic test results, medical records, and family history and inputs information into a tracking database.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives.
