About The Position

This posting is for full-time, Safety Sensitive Generator Technician positions within the Department of Public Works, Utility Operations, as part of a proficiency advancement series. This series includes Generator Technician I, II, III, and Senior Generator Technician. Employees advance non-competitively through the series by acquiring skills and certifications, leading to skill-based pay increases. The specific classification and pay rate will be determined by a pre-hire test assessing technical skill level. These roles are designated as essential and require reporting to work under all weather conditions, with potential for overtime, holidays, weekends, and standby duty. The work involves frequent bending, climbing, stooping, reaching, walking, crawling in tight spaces, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

Graduation from high school.
Generator Technician I: One (1) or more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines or electrical motors.
Generator Technician II: Maintenance career certification as a Generator Technician I.
Generator Technician II: Two (2) or more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of internal combustion engine-driven generator sets and related electrical equipment.
A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license (for Generator Technician I).
A valid commercial Class A motor vehicle operator's license (required for Generator Technician II, III, and Senior; candidates without it have six months from hire to obtain).
Ability to work under all weather conditions.
Willingness to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and standby duty.
Ability to perform frequent bending, climbing, stooping, reaching, walking, crawling in tight spaces, and lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Preference for candidates possessing a Class A Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator's license for Generator Technician II positions.
Preference for candidates with experience in "Load Bank" testing procedures related to standby engine-driven power generation systems.

Responsibilities

Perform basic, intermediate, and advanced preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on engine-driven emergency power generation systems and related electrical equipment.
Support the efficient and safe operation of stationary and mobile engine-driven emergency power generation systems in wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants.
Conduct performance testing of engine-driven emergency power generation systems.
Assist others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks.
Execute specific instructions from senior co-workers or supervisors.
Serve as a lead worker for small work groups (Generator Technician III and Senior Generator Technician).
Train lower-level workers (Senior Generator Technician).
Perform administrative and lead worker duties associated with a multi-person maintenance work center (Senior Generator Technician).
