We are seeking candidates with experience in: Asphalt, sidewalk or street maintenance; Vegetation maintenance; Heavy equipment operation; and/or Public sector, residential or commercial construction. Maintenance Technicians perform operation, construction, maintenance and repair work for the City's streets and facilities and may be cross trained to work in one or more areas as required. Maintenance Technician I: entry level position responsible for performing routine work. Maintenance Technician II: skilled, journey level position responsible for performing more complex work. Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
Maintenance Technician I: one year of residential or commercial construction, maintenance or repair experience
Maintenance Technician II: three years of residential or commercial construction, maintenance or repair experience
OR a combination of experience, education and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required.
Knowledge of: City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of: Principles, methods, tools, equipment and materials used in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of facilities, rights-of-way, streets, and surface and stormwater drainage systems.
Knowledge of: Occupational health hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of: Applicable local, state and federal laws, codes and regulations pertaining to assigned area.
Knowledge of: Principles of construction and heavy and specialized equipment operation.
Knowledge of: Basic arithmetic and basic computer operations.
Knowledge of: Traffic rules, regulations and flow patterns.
Ability to: Safely and proficiently operate machines, tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of City infrastructure.
Ability to: Perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to: Operate heavy and specialized equipment.
Ability to: Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to: Respond to emergency calls within one hour when assigned on-call responsibilities.
Ability to: Perform after-hours assignments as directed.
Ability to: Quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities and remain calm and effective in difficult situations.
Ability to: Work independently or as a team member to meet required schedules and deadlines.
Ability to: Support and model the identified vision, values and behaviors of the organization.

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check is required.
First Aid/CPR certification is required within twelve months of employment.
Washington State Traffic Control Flagger’s certification is required within twelve months of employment.
Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CECSL) certificate is required within twelve months of employment.
CDL holders must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and subsequent random drug and alcohol tests.
Additional requirements for Maintenance Technician I: Class A Washington State commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required within twelve months of employment.
Additional requirements for Maintenance Technician II: Class A Washington State commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required at hire.

Responsibilities

Reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to back hoe, excavator, dump truck, front end loader, bucket truck, chipper, water truck, and snow removal equipment.
Operates a variety of specialized equipment, depending on work assignment.
Performs difficult manual labor and technical troubleshooting under adverse physical and environmental conditions for extended periods of time.
Performs field work as assigned; reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
Maintains, repairs and constructs streets infrastructure and facilities including pavement surfaces, road shoulders, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and gravel roads.
Maintains, repairs and constructs grounds infrastructure and facilities vegetation, including playgrounds, trails, parks and streetscapes.
Performs vegetation control including roadside mowing, overhead trimming and storm debris clean up.
Performs pavement maintenance including crack sealing, pothole repair, full depth asphalt repairs, and shoulder grading.
Provides construction support for infrastructure as assigned.
Implements traffic control plans to maintain work zone safety and regulatory compliance.
Resolves customer complaints.
Performs emergency snow and ice control operations.
Maintains timely and regular attendance.
Other duties as assigned.
