About The Position

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking a General Surgeon to join their team at qathet General Hospital in Powell River. This is a permanent, fee-for-service position to replace a retiring surgeon. Powell River is located in the North Sunshine Coast, a region known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. qathet General Hospital is a 33-bed facility with a supportive team of primary care physicians and specialists. The general surgery department provides full-service general surgery, including endoscopy. The successful candidate will join a team of two other surgeons with an established office and experienced medical office assistants. The role involves a broad surgical practice in a welcoming community setting. Significant surgical experience, particularly in a rural setting, is considered an asset. The work includes office, endoscopy, ambulatory, and operating room procedures. The current schedule is arranged in 6-week cycles, with 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off call. On-call weeks involve approximately 2 days of endoscopy, 1 half-day of ambulatory procedures, and 1 full OR day, alongside clinic duties. Call is divided into 1-week increments. The schedule is collaboratively developed annually and offers flexibility. The practice also hosts 1-2 general surgery residents each year, offering teaching and mentorship opportunities. Applicants must comply with the Provincial Health Officer’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination order.

Requirements

  • Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) - Full
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) - Mandatory
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) - Mandatory

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
  • Significant surgical experience (10+ years), especially in a rural setup.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full service general surgery, including endoscopy.
  • Participate in office, endoscopy, ambulatory, and operating room procedures.
  • Share call responsibilities in 1-week increments.
  • Collaboratively develop the annual surgical schedule.
  • Provide teaching and mentorship to general surgery residents.
