About The Position

Northgate Gonzalez Market is hiring a part-time General Merchandise Clerk for its new Bellflower store. The role supports merchandise presentation and store operations by stocking and facing coolers, shelves, and displays; rotating perishable products; removing out-of-code merchandise; and maintaining housekeeping and sanitation standards. The clerk also assists customers, responds to safety hazards and emergencies, and reports relevant personnel or policy concerns to the store team leader. The position involves working around refrigerated storage areas, including temperatures as low as 20°F for up to 20 minutes at a time, and damp or humid conditions with potentially wet or slippery floors. Physical duties include lifting, climbing ladders, sweeping and mopping, dusting shelves, and carrying trash containers. High school education or equivalent is preferred. A forklift certification is required only if operating a forklift.

Ability to hear, speak, and understand spoken language to respond to pages, assist customers, answer telephones, and communicate effectively.
Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret, and understand English and Spanish sufficiently to understand company handbooks, policies, procedures, and other job-related documents.
Regularly sit, stand, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
Occasionally lift or carry up to 55 pounds and frequently lift or exert moderate amounts of weight.
Ability to climb a ladder to retrieve items from freezer cases, stockrooms, and other storage areas; sweep and mop floors; dust and face shelves; and carry trash containers to an outside bin.
Sufficient close vision and ability to adjust focus to check and verify invoices and other written documents.
Ability to work around fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants, and flowers without allergic effects that adversely impair performance.
Sufficient physical mobility or agility to respond quickly to emergencies, spills, breakage, shoplifting, security assistance requests, and customer accidents.
Ability to stock coolers and shelves and work in temperatures as low as 20°F in refrigerated storage areas for up to 20 minutes at a time.
Must pass a pre-employment drug test; the posting states that it will not screen for non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites.

Responsibilities

Handle damaged and spoiled products and help control damaged-goods levels.
Keep refrigerated coolers, shelves, and displays stocked and faced according to tag allocations or department standards.
Help build store displays to support sales and turnover, and present merchandise neatly and attractively.
Rotate perishable merchandise according to store policy and product dates, and remove out-of-code merchandise.
Maintain housekeeping and sanitation standards in accordance with store policy and applicable health regulations.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Greet customers and provide prompt, courteous service and assistance.
Notify the store team leader about personnel situations or policy violations affecting store operations, and situations that may require disciplinary action.
Respond promptly to emergencies and potential safety hazards, including spills and broken containers, and remain at the scene until help arrives.
Follow safety policies and procedures and read safety posters and bulletins.
