About The Position

The City of Olathe is seeking qualified candidates for General Fleet Maintenance Technician I–IV positions to help maintain the vehicles and equipment that support essential City services. A $4,000 hiring bonus is available for eligible candidates. General Fleet Maintenance Technicians perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units that support daily municipal operations and essential City services. This work helps keep fleet assets safe, reliable, and ready for service. Responsibilities include inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and drivetrain systems. In municipal fleet maintenance, your work has a direct impact every day. You are not just repairing vehicles and equipment—you are helping keep public works, utilities, parks, facilities, and other essential City services operating safely and reliably for the community. Positions may be filled at the I, II, III, or IV level depending on the selected candidate’s experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability. While core duties are generally consistent across levels, the complexity of work, degree of independent judgment, and minimum qualifications increase with each level.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record.
Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment, if required by assignment.
DOT medical certificate within the required timeframe, if required by assignment.
Air conditioning and refrigerant recovery/recycling certification at hire or within a specified period after hire, depending on assignment.

Nice To Haves

Related vocational or technical training may substitute for some experience or be considered qualifying preparation.
Related vocational or technical training preferred.
Technical training and job-related certifications preferred.
Advanced technical training and certifications strongly preferred.
ASE certifications or other related industry certifications.
Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems.
Experience with preventive maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, and fleet equipment.
Experience using scan tools, diagnostic software, and computerized maintenance systems.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units.
Conduct inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and drivetrain systems.
Ensure fleet assets are safe, reliable, and ready for service.
