About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves performing various tasks related to the area of assignment to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and order.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling with both hands and arms (5-35 lbs force), climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, overhead reaching, and good sight with depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

High Dusting: Using a treated high duster, clean surfaces above shoulder height such as lights, curtain tips, vents, and ledges in a counter-clockwise direction.
Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning: Using a germicidal solution, sanitize surfaces below shoulder height including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans. Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls. Spot clean windows.
Bathroom Cleaning: Using a germicidal solution, clean and sanitize sinks, toilet seats, the outside of toilet bowls, and the inside of toilet bowls using a Johnnie Mop. Clean and refill soap and paper dispensers.
Empty Trash Cans: Remove and replace liners, wiping down cans if liquid is present.
Floor Dusting or Vacuuming: Dust mop floors using an "S" stroke, ensuring all furniture and restroom areas are covered. Clean mop heads and dispose of dust. Vacuum floors starting from the back of the room, ensuring all furniture is covered.
Grounds care: Clean and check outside areas multiple times daily, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, wiping lower window ledges, high dusting for dust and cobwebs, cleaning public area glass, and policing the parking lot for trash.
Public Common Areas: Dust mop and spot mop main hallways. Clean glass multiple times daily. Clean planters inside and out. Check for cobwebs and perform high dusting of window areas at least twice a week, checking all corners and edges for debris.
Food Court: Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables. Place chairs back under tables. Spot clean spills. Empty and clean trash cans. Remove dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays. Police outside eating areas.
Floor Sanitizing: Using a germicidal solution, sanitize floors starting from the back of the room, mopping under furniture and behind doors.
Inspection: Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
Daily Tasks: Perform hall, lobby, stairs, water fountain, furniture, and wall spotting, and high dusting daily.
Customer Relations and Service: Knock before entering occupied rooms, be friendly and cheerful, answer questions courteously or refer to a supervisor, report broken items, work quietly, stay in the assigned work area, maintain a clean appearance, and report to the supervisor if work is not completed by the end of the shift.
Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care such as stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto scrubbing and buffing floors.
