About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities at the assigned facility to keep it clean, sanitary, and orderly, along with other related duties. Tasks include high dusting, sanitizing and spot cleaning, bathroom cleaning, emptying trash, dusting or vacuuming floors, floor sanitizing, and cleaning outdoor grounds, public common areas, and food court areas. The cleaner inspects completed work, corrects issues as needed, provides courteous customer service, reports broken or out-of-order items to a supervisor, and performs other duties as assigned, which may include floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and floor scrubbing and buffing. The position is at Home Depot in Fergus Falls, with a stated schedule of 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., 3, 4, or 7 days per week.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic janitorial work, methods, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices and the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals according to MSDS sheets.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and interpret cleaning-chemical instructions and warning labels.
Ability to communicate sufficiently with coworkers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Physical ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods; lift and carry 1–30 pounds; push and pull using both hands and arms with 5–35 pounds of force; climb stairs and ladders; bend, twist, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach overhead, and handle and operate equipment and tools throughout the shift.
Adequate sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination to perform cleaning tasks and maintain safety while operating equipment and tools.

Responsibilities

High-dust surfaces above shoulder height, including lights, curtain tips, vents, and ledges, and clean the duster after use.
Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height and spot-clean fingerprints, smudges, and windows using appropriate cleaning solutions.
Clean bathrooms, including sinks and toilets; check and refill soap and paper dispensers as needed.
Empty trash cans, wipe them if needed, and replace liners.
Dust mop or vacuum floors, including beneath furniture, and clean and dispose of dust appropriately.
Maintain outdoor areas by cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, curb lines, and parking lots, spot-cleaning spills, removing gum, and wiping benches, vending machines, window ledges, and public-area glass.
Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass and planters, checking for debris and cobwebs, and high-dusting window areas at least twice weekly.
Clean and sanitize food court tables, spot-clean spills, empty trash, move dirty trays to the washroom, clean trays using the tray power washer, and police outdoor eating areas.
Sanitize floors using the appropriate germicidal solution, working from the back of the room and cleaning beneath furniture and behind doors.
Review completed rooms, check furniture placement, and make corrections as needed.
Clean halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, and furniture; perform wall spotting and high dusting daily.
Provide courteous customer service, answer or refer customer questions, report broken or out-of-order items, work quietly, remain in the assigned work area unless directed otherwise, maintain a neat appearance, and report unfinished assignments to the supervisor.
Perform other assigned duties, which may include stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and floor auto-scrubbing and buffing.
