About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities, keeping them clean, sanitary, and orderly, and performs other tasks related to the assigned area. Duties include cleaning interior spaces, bathrooms, floors, public areas, food court areas, and outdoor grounds; replenishing dispensers; handling trash; and inspecting completed work. The role may also include floor care such as stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto-scrubbing and buffing. The cleaner is expected to provide courteous customer service, follow oral and written instructions and chemical warning labels, use cleaning chemicals and janitorial equipment safely, and report broken or out-of-order items and unfinished assignments to a supervisor. The position requires physical activity throughout the shift, including walking, standing, lifting and carrying supplies, pushing and pulling, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and operating cleaning equipment.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic janitorial work, methods, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices and the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals according to MSDS sheets.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate sufficiently with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to perform assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods; lifting and carrying 1–30 pounds; pushing and pulling with both hands and arms using 5–35 pounds of force; climbing stairs and ladders; bending, twisting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, and fingering.
Sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination sufficient to perform cleaning tasks, maintain safety standards, and operate equipment and tools.

Responsibilities

High dust surfaces above shoulder height, including lights, door tops, vents, and ledges.
Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height and spot-clean fingerprints, smudges, and windows using appropriate cleaning solutions.
Clean bathrooms, including sinks and toilets; clean and refill soap and paper dispensers as needed.
Empty trash cans, wipe them when necessary, and replace liners.
Dust mop or vacuum rooms, including under furniture, and dispose of collected dust.
Clean and inspect outdoor areas, including ash urns, trash cans, sidewalks, flower beds, curb lines, benches, vending machines, window ledges, public glass, and parking lots.
Clean public common areas, including hallways, planters, windows, corners, and edges; perform high dusting as specified.
Clean and sanitize food court tables, return chairs to their places, spot-clean spills, empty trash, and police outdoor eating areas.
Collect dirty trays, take them to the wash room, clean them using the tray power washer, and stack clean trays for reuse.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, mopping under furniture and behind doors.
Inspect completed rooms, check furniture placement, and make corrections as needed.
Clean halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, and furniture; perform wall spot cleaning and high dusting daily.
Provide courteous customer service, answer questions or refer customers, work quietly, and remain in the assigned work area unless directed otherwise.
Report broken or out-of-order items and notify the supervisor if work is incomplete at the end of the shift.
Perform other assigned duties, which may include floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and floor auto-scrubbing and buffing.
