About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities at the assigned Home Depot facility in Tewksbury, keeping the building clean, sanitary, and orderly. Duties include high dusting, sanitizing and spot cleaning, bathroom cleaning, emptying trash, dust mopping or vacuuming, floor sanitizing, and grounds care. The role also maintains public common areas and the food court, including cleaning tables, handling trays, and keeping indoor and outdoor areas free of debris. The cleaner inspects completed work, reports broken or out-of-order items to a supervisor, and provides courteous service to customers. Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor or Account Manager, including floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and floor auto-scrubbing and buffing.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic janitorial work, methods, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices and the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals according to MSDS sheets.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate sufficiently with coworkers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to perform the assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods; lifting and carrying 1–30 pounds; pushing and pulling with 5–35 pounds of force; climbing stairs and ladders; bending, twisting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, and fingering.
Sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination sufficient to perform cleaning tasks, operate equipment, use tools, and maintain safety standards.

Responsibilities

High dust surfaces above shoulder height, including lights, vents, and ledges.
Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height and spot-clean fingerprints, smudges, and windows.
Clean bathrooms, toilets, sinks, and dispensers; replenish soap and paper supplies as needed.
Empty trash cans, clean them when necessary, and replace liners.
Dust mop or vacuum floors, including under furniture and in restrooms.
Clean and inspect outside areas, including ash urns, trash cans, sidewalks, flower beds, curb lines, benches, vending machines, window ledges, public-area glass, and parking lots.
Maintain public common areas by dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass and planters, and checking corners and window areas for dirt and cobwebs.
Clean and sanitize food-court tables, spot-clean spills, empty trash, return chairs to their places, and police outdoor eating areas.
Take dirty trays to the wash room, clean them using the tray power washer, and stack clean trays for reuse.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, including under furniture and behind doors.
Inspect completed rooms, check furniture placement, and make corrections as needed.
Clean halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, and furniture; perform wall spotting and high dusting daily.
Treat customers courteously, answer questions or refer customers to someone who can help, and work quietly.
Report broken or out-of-order items and incomplete work assignments to the supervisor.
Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance and remain in the assigned work area unless directed otherwise.
Perform other assigned duties, which may include floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto-scrubbing and buffing floors.
