About The Position

The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking a General Activities Therapist 2 to join their team. DYS's mission is to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities. This role involves planning, organizing, and conducting activity programs for youth in residential treatment units, with a focus on addressing their criminological and behavioral needs. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with a passion for helping youth and a solid background in relevant areas. DYS is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program and operates as a drug-free workplace.

Requirements

• 30 months of experience with coaching, personal training, and/or fitness instruction OR 30 months of experience providing work direction to incarcerated persons and training/development.
• OR Completion of an associate degree in recreation; 12 months of experience in activity therapy or recreation.
• OR Completion of an undergraduate core program in recreation; 6 months of experience in activity therapy or recreation.
• OR 6 months of experience as a General Activities Therapist 1, 44211.
• OR Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment.
• Must undergo a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check (BCI & FBI, Public Safety, State of Ohio Taxation).
• Must participate in paid, mandatory 4 weeks of training (Week 1 at CJCF, Weeks 2-4 in Orient, Ohio, 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday).

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, conduct, and ensure implementation of clinical adjunctive therapy program/services for youth assigned to residential treatment units.
• Organize and conduct individual and/or group recreational and activity therapy activities, such as sports, arts and crafts, music, drama, physical fitness, and community service functions.
• Plan and instruct youth in a variety of leisure and therapeutic activities designed to expand knowledge, skills, and fitness levels.
• Participate in weekly treatment team meetings to provide updates on youth recreational participation and progress.
• Prepare reports and/or progress notes for inclusion in youth records.
• Review youth physical fitness assessments to prepare individualized activity therapy programs.
• Develop and coordinate community service projects.
• Maintain community contact with church groups, volunteer opportunities, and civic organizations to support community service projects.
• Supervise youth workers assigned to the work area.
• Maintain recreation equipment and areas, ensuring neatness, orderliness, and accurate inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Ensure safety measures are applied to all activities and the use/storage of equipment.
• Serve as an official for all group activities performed by the youth.
• Transport youth to off-grounds activities.
• Coordinate activities for youth with other agencies and/or DYS departments.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including participating in organized functions, attending meetings, seminars, and trainings.
