The purpose of the activity therapy occupation is to conduct, organize, coordinate, and administer recreational programs such as physical education, arts & crafts. It also involves conducting medically approved specialty area programs including occupational, structured therapeutic, pre-vocational, vocational, adaptive sports activities, interactive computer access, card games, adapted aquatics, music therapy, art therapy, movement therapy, and animal-assisted therapy (AAT). The role includes running or organizing special events, outings, performing arts, evening group programs, or video viewing for specific therapeutic and/or goal-reaching purposes. The therapist must have considerable knowledge of activity therapy operations to plan, organize, and conduct individual and/or group classes in activity therapy programs. Additionally, the position requires planning, conducting, implementing, and monitoring general recreational, personal development, structured therapeutic, and entertainment activities like softball, basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, pool, arts & crafts, weight lifting, and exercises. Participation in and attendance at meetings, conferences, and training sessions is also expected.
