About The Position

The Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy Technician is responsible for assisting in procedures, accurate room set-up, cleaning, assembly and disinfection of all scopes and supplies. This role involves assisting in the performance of GI Procedures in an outpatient setting, ensuring the procedure room is correctly set up with all needed accessories, and testing endoscopes for proper function prior to the start of each procedure. The technician will also be responsible for reporting malfunctioning equipment, initiating network startup and photo documentation procedures, stocking and maintaining inventory, and reordering supplies as needed. A strong understanding of aseptic techniques and infection prevention procedures is crucial, including inspecting equipment for defects and performing required maintenance. The role requires demonstrating proper handling and use of various video endoscopes and assisting with therapeutic interventions. Specimen collection, handling, and labeling are also key responsibilities, as is the cleaning and decontamination of endoscopes per protocol. The technician will maintain required records, assist with room turnovers, process faulty equipment for repair, distribute supplies, and ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of healthcare-related experience required.
  • Knowledge of endoscopy procedures.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate quality control concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic word processing and worksheets.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record.
  • Skill in communicating clearly with diverse publics.
  • Skill in excellent customer service.
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions and follow written protocols.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adapt to repetitive, short cycle operations.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to operate large pieces of equipment and to assemble and disassemble minor pieces.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours as defined in the job offer.
  • BLS certification within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the performance of GI Procedures in an outpatient setting.
  • Correctly sets up procedure room for assigned procedure, inclusive of all needed accessories.
  • Tests endoscopes for proper function prior to start of procedure.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
  • Initiates startup of endoscopy network and photo documentation procedures.
  • Stocks and maintains inventory of procedure room.
  • Initiates the reorder of supplies, as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection prevention procedures.
  • Inspects all equipment and accessories for defects prior to use to ensure highest level of infection prevention and performs required environmental and/or equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Demonstrates proper handling and use of various types and sizes of video endoscopes, including colonoscopies, upper endoscopes, flexible sigmoidoscopes.
  • Assists with therapeutic intervention such as balloon dilations, polypectomy, and biopsies.
  • Participates in specimen collection and handling and correctly labels specimens according to policy.
  • Cleans and decontaminates endoscopes per protocol.
  • Keeps required records such as biological checks and unit checks.
  • Assists with room turnovers.
  • Receives faulty equipment and processes it for repair service.
  • Distributes supplies and stocks storage areas.
  • Provides privacy, as well as a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
