Gas Service Technician Apprentice - Eau Claire, WI
About The Position
Xcel Energy anticipates hiring one or more Apprentice Gas Distribution Service Technicians at its Western Avenue Service Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The starting apprentice rate is $32.90 per hour at Step 1 (65% of the base journeyman rate); the starting base journeyman rate is $50.62 per hour. Apprentice pay progresses through six steps, from 65% to 90% of journeyman pay. Step placement is based on candidate skills and qualifications in accordance with the union contract. The position involves gas and electric utility service work, including locating underground facilities, meter service, leak and building surveys, emergency response, and supporting gas distribution construction and maintenance. Applicants should be self-motivated, work well on a team, and demonstrate a positive attitude and strong commitment to safety, customer service, customer satisfaction, and productivity. Qualified employees will be placed on an on-call roster and must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Additional training in natural gas, electricity, or related fields.
- Experience locating gas and electric underground facilities.
- Commitment to working safely and complying with company safety rules.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reside within a 20-mile radius of the assigned service center within the first six months of hire.
- Meet driver qualification requirements specified in FMCSR parts 382 and 391.
- Obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within the first six months of hire.
- Participate in the D.O.T. random drug and alcohol testing program.
- Be willing and able to respond to after-hours emergency callouts.

Responsibilities
- Locate gas lines and underground electric cables.
- Disconnect and reconnect gas and electric meters for stop-and-start service and credit and collections.
- Perform meter changes for single-phase electric and gas periodic meters.
- Perform gas leak and public building surveys.
- Respond to gas emergencies and odor calls.
- Work with the gas construction crew to install or maintain the gas distribution system.
- Respond to after-hours emergency callouts when required.
