About The Position

The Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the garage, ensuring efficient workflow, quality service, customer satisfaction and compliance with safety standards. This role is also responsible for managing inventory, parts procurement and vendor relationships to support uninterrupted shop operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 3–5 years of experience in diesel repair shop operations or automotive service management.
  • Prior inventory or parts management experience required.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, repair procedures, and diagnostic tools.
  • Familiarity with inventory software and shop management systems.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in business management, automotive/diesel technology, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of the repair shop, including scheduling, job assignments, and productivity monitoring.
  • Ensure all work orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Implement and enforce shop policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop environment.
  • Coordinate with garage foreman and mechanics to prioritize and manage repair jobs efficiently.
  • Lead, coach and motivate a team of diesel mechanics, technicians, and support staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, assign tasks and support employee development.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and assist with hiring and onboarding as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between customers and technicians to ensure service expectations are met.
  • Address and resolve customer complaints or concerns in a professional manner.
  • Review and approve estimates and invoices before submission to customers.
  • Oversee ordering, receiving, and tracking of parts, tools, and shop supplies.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct regular inventory counts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure cost-effective and timely supply deliveries.
  • Monitor usage and minimize waste or loss through proper inventory controls.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports for upper management.
  • Monitor and manage shop budget, labor costs, and productivity metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other safety/environmental regulations.
