About The Position

School based advocates will provide case management and direct client services to gang involved youth and families. Assists in program development, community education and resource development.

Requirements

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, social or behavioral sciences or other related field; and two (2) years of experience working with high-risk youth; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required Sheriff’s Office pre-employment background check.
  • Knowledge of gang culture and family dynamics.
  • Knowledge of the Juvenile Justice Process.
  • Knowledge of What Works Principles.
  • Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of Local gang issues.
  • Knowledge of how to identify gang signs, symbols, graffiti, colors etc.
  • Knowledge of all Law Enforcement Bureau (LEB) and CGF Advocate Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to network effectively with a variety of types of organizations, including government agencies, schools, social service agencies, law enforcement, courts/probations/corrections, grassroots organizations.
  • Ability to understand and explain factors leading to gang involvement, community dynamics and history.
  • Ability to fully explain the Juvenile Court and Justice System processes.
  • Ability to accurately conduct an evidence-based Youth Risk Assessment.
  • Ability to demonstrate organization, administration and personnel management skills.
  • Ability to exercise judgment regarding appropriate information sharing, confidentiality requirements, and human relations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform meeting facilitation, conflict resolution, and consensus-building.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to perform general office administrative activities: copying, filing, delivering and using the telephone.

Responsibilities

  • Provides gang specific case management, family support and gang prevention, intervention and desistance services to gang involved youth and families.
  • Meets with clients weekly in a school based setting.
  • Follows the Choose Gang Free (CGF) program structure.
  • Communicates effectively with members of treatment team.
  • Maintains accurate case files (physical and electronic).
  • Reports progress to student support meetings.
  • Attends weekly team meetings/case staffing.
  • Follows all Law Enforcement Bureau (LEB) policies and CGF Advocate Code of Ethics.
  • Provides community and faculty gang education and prevention training.
  • Participates as a member of local gang reduction coordinating bodies.
  • Assists in program, community education and resource development.
  • Provides reports for Juvenile and Family courts as needed
