About The Position

Fort Bend County is seeking motivated individuals for a Paid Cadet position within the Sheriff's Office. This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in law enforcement. The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy offers paid training, college credit hours upon completion, and preparation for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Licensing Examination. Cadets will develop essential skills such as leadership, discipline, communication, and decision-making through rigorous physical and scenario-based training.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED with 12 completed college hours.
  • No experience required.
  • Good organizational skills; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public and other employees; ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.
  • Per Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements, applicant must be U.S. Citizen and 21 years old.
  • Must meet TCOLE and GGLEA minimum standards for licensing that include: Never been on court ordered community supervision or probation (including deferred adjudication) for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order; not currently under indictment for any criminal offense; never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years; never been convicted of any domestic violence offense and not be prohibited by state of federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition or from operating a motor vehicle.
  • Must take and pass a reading comprehension exam and a timed run (16:00 for 1.5 miles).
  • Take and pass the following examinations: polygraph, psychological, physical screening and urinalysis.
  • Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Attends education and training sessions full time per established criteria.
  • Participates in rigorous physical fitness and physical agility training programs in order to meet the physical demands of the peace officer position.
  • Participates in and must demonstrate minimum proficiency skills in high risk, critical tasks and skills based training exercises such as emergency vehicle and pursuit driving, firearms, non-lethal weapons and self-defense training.
  • Must learn and demonstrate a mastery of numerous State and Federal laws such as the Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Traffic Laws and the Constitution.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during local emergencies as directed by the Sheriff or Chief Deputy.
  • Participates in activities and duties assigned by the Sheriff or Chief Deputy.
