About The Position

Santé is building an AI operating system for local retailers that brings point of sale, integrated payments, eCommerce, inventory, delivery integrations, marketing, bookkeeping, and AI agents into one platform. The company aims to give independent liquor, grocery, and convenience stores technology that helps them compete with national chains. Engineers work in person in New York City, ship daily, use AI coding agents, and receive direct feedback from store owners. The Platform Engineering team owns POS and checkout, architecture, and observability. It builds foundations used by Money Movement, Merchant Experience, and Applied AI, while shipping merchant-facing features and establishing technical patterns for other teams. The core stack is TypeScript, React, Next.js, tRPC, Prisma, and PostgreSQL. The engineer will own features from product decisions through production, making complex systems straightforward for merchants. Work may include improving checkout, tracing latency into PostgreSQL, and designing payment retries that prevent duplicate charges. The role shapes both the merchant-facing product and the foundations other engineers use. It is full-time and in-office in Flatiron, NYC, with a base salary of $220,000–$280,000 plus meaningful equity.

Requirements

  • A record of owning substantial full-stack products in production, with the ability to explain decisions, tradeoffs, and user impact.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and depth in modern frontend development, including interaction details, state management, accessibility, and performance.
  • Depth in backend design and relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, including API boundaries, data modeling, transactions, query plans, and indexes.
  • Practical understanding of distributed systems, including concurrency, idempotency, retries, and partial failure.
  • Experience diagnosing production problems with logs, traces, and metrics and fixing underlying causes.
  • Product judgment to turn ambiguous merchant problems into focused solutions and choose simpler designs when appropriate.
  • Autonomy to take open-ended problems from first principles to working products, and communication skills to bring teammates along.

Nice To Haves

  • Payments or retail experience, including card terminals, preauthorization and capture, multi-location operations, or offline-resilient POS.
  • Experience with the core stack or operating Aurora/RDS, ElastiCache, and production observability tools such as Datadog and OpenTelemetry.
  • Experience establishing shared architecture or developer tools adopted across teams.
  • Experience building LLM-powered products or improving how teams use AI coding agents.

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship full-stack features, from intuitive React interfaces to reliable APIs and data models.
  • Own projects from problem definition and technical design through testing, launch, and iteration, working closely with Product and store owners.
  • Strengthen checkout and payments so sales remain correct and recoverable through concurrent writes, network failures, and retries.
  • Build shared components, internal tools, and development workflows that improve the effectiveness of the engineering team.
  • Operate shipped software by tracing slow interactions from the browser to PostgreSQL, improving observability, and eliminating recurring causes of production incidents.
  • Direct AI coding agents in daily work, reviewing their output and validating behavior before it reaches merchants.
  • Raise engineering standards through design reviews, clear code, and mentoring.

Benefits

  • Fully company-covered medical and dental benefits.
  • 401(k).
  • Weekly catered lunch.
  • Dinner provided each evening for employees who would like to eat with the team.
  • Meaningful equity.
