Front-End (UI) Platform Engineer-Retail Point of Sale Systems

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions - External•Durham, NC
•Hybrid

About The Position

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is hiring a Front-End (UI) Platform Engineer to own and evolve the ELERA point-of-sale client, a Vue 3 and TypeScript application framework that supports fixed-lane, self-checkout, kiosk, specialty, associate-mobile, and customer-display experiences. This is a platform and architecture-track role rather than a feature-focused role. The successful candidate will be trained to become the architect for the ELERA POS client. The position focuses on the framework used by internal teams, retailers, partners, and services engineers to build and extend their screens. Its scope includes dependency injection and plugin systems, customer configuration overrides, hardware integrations, maintaining a legacy Dojo application alongside the modern client, and coordinating the build and release process. The role requires experience with Vue.js and Java enterprise technologies, especially complex browser-side functionality, and success in a fast-paced, collaborative, customer-first environment. The role is hybrid, with at least three days per week in person, and candidates must be local to the Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina area or Bentonville, Arkansas area. The company will not provide current or future visa sponsorship; applicants must be able to work in the United States without it.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
  • Software Engineer III level: 5 or more years of professional web development experience; Software Engineer IV level: 9 or more years of full-stack web development experience, particularly on the client side.
  • Strong analytical and TypeScript/object-oriented programming skills, including generics, declaration files, and strict-mode discipline.
  • At least 2 years with Vue 3 or an equivalent modern component framework, with depth in reactivity semantics, routing, and centralized state management.
  • Experience building shared libraries or frameworks consumed by other teams, beyond end-user features.
  • Working knowledge of a dependency-injection/inversion-of-control container and decorator-based registration, including lifetimes and resolution order.
  • Deep web development skills in HTML5, JavaScript, TypeScript, SASS, XML/JSON, and Vue.js; module-system fluency (ESM, AMD, UMD); and modern build tooling such as Vite.
  • Unit testing as a default practice and browser automation with at least one of Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium, including diagnosing flaky tests rather than simply retrying them.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively in a large legacy codebase without rewriting it.
  • Experience developing in a Java-based environment, including enterprise or web-based content, sufficient to debug a service the candidate does not own and identify where a defect resides.
  • REST and OpenAPI contract knowledge, including understanding what constitutes a breaking change.
  • Comfort with CI/CD, including pipelines, containerized builds, artifact registries, dependency resolution, lockfiles, and transitive version conflicts.
  • Proficiency with Git at team scale, including long-lived release lines, backports, and conflict resolution that preserves work.
  • Experience with operating systems such as Linux, Windows, iOS, or Android, including installation, light administration, and simple scripting.
  • Knowledge of software development concepts, methodology, and life cycle, especially Agile.
  • Clear technical writing and a record of documenting decisions that others followed.
  • Strong problem determination and debugging skills, attention to detail, and teamwork.
  • Ability to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
  • Must be local to the Raleigh/Durham, NC area or Bentonville, AR area and able to work in person at least three days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Point-of-sale, kiosk, self-checkout, or other attended/unattended retail systems experience and general knowledge of the retail industry.
  • Experience with plugin or extension architectures built against by third parties, including designing extension points that outlive their first consumer.
  • Experience with POS-attached devices such as scanners, scales, printers, payment terminals, and cash recyclers, and duplex device protocols such as WebSocket or STOMP, including retry, reconnect, and half-open connection handling.
  • Experience debugging failures caused by hardware, firmware, or drivers rather than application code.
  • Cross-document and cross-context work involving iframes, postMessage, origin and window-context reasoning, and storage scoping.
  • Working knowledge of Dojo, React, or AngularJS in addition to Vue.js, or comparable experience maintaining a superseded framework in production.
  • Working knowledge of Docker containers and Spring Boot; knowledge of Swagger and REST design.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and debug client UI and framework code in Vue 3 and TypeScript, and mentor teammates doing the same.
  • Design for internal developers and external retailer, partner, and services engineers who extend the platform.
  • Own and extend the client extensibility model, including dependency injection, decorator-based registration, plugin loading, UI slot injection, and the base/TGCS/partner/customer configuration merge chain.
  • Maintain backward compatibility for plugins and customizations built against earlier framework versions.
  • Publish versioned shared packages for other teams, following semantic-versioning and deprecation practices.
  • Keep legacy Dojo and modern UI generations shippable together, migrating the legacy layer incrementally.
  • Extend the device integration layer for scanners, scales, printers, payment terminals, cash recyclers, and customer displays, including the mock device harness for running the full client on a laptop.
  • Maintain the client release train, including hybrid Maven/npm builds, monorepo publishing, Jenkins multi-branch pipelines across the framework dependency chain, and support for constrained or air-gapped customer environments.
  • Own client-side quality through unit and component tests under a coverage gate and a browser-automated BDD suite that gates the build.
  • Write and defend architecture decision records, component analyses, and solution designs, and represent the client stack at the Architecture Review Board.
  • Maintain the client Self-Enablement Guide and generated extension catalogs, and serve as a technical interface to key technology partners.
  • Perform unit and functional tests of product features and resolve unit, functional, customer-reported, and partner-reported defects across supported release lines.
  • Provide reasonable estimates, meet deliverables while assisting the team, and help the team meet its KPIs.
  • Use good programming patterns, identify anti-patterns, and adapt to change while pursuing innovative solutions.

Benefits

  • Group health coverage, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • Employee Assistance Programs.
  • Pre-tax spending accounts.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Company-provided life insurance.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Employee discounts.
  • Paid holidays, paid vacation, and sick/personal days.
