About The Position

Altera is seeking an experienced FPGA Development Tools Manager to lead a team responsible for the development, integration, and delivery of industry‑leading FPGA software tools. Based in Toronto, this role plays a critical part in shaping the tools used by customers and internal teams to design, compile, debug, and optimize FPGA‑based solutions. You will manage highly technical software engineers and work cross‑functionally with architecture, hardware, systems, validation, and product teams to deliver scalable, high‑quality FPGA development tools across multiple platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 8+ years of software development experience, with 3+ years in a technical leadership or people management role
  • Strong understanding of FPGA development flows and related tools (synthesis, P&R, timing, verification, or debug)
  • Experience leading complex, multi‑component software systems
  • Proficiency in software engineering fundamentals (C/C++, Python, build systems, version control, testing frameworks)
  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional, geographically distributed teams
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills
  • Applicants must be eligible for any required Canada export authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with FPGA vendors’ toolchains or EDA software
  • Background in compiler technology, algorithms, or performance optimization
  • Familiarity with hardware/software co‑design and verification workflows
  • Experience delivering developer‑facing tools or platforms at scale
  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical discipline

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of software engineers developing FPGA design and development tools (e.g., synthesis, place and route, timing analysis, simulation, debug, and compiler infrastructure)
  • Set technical direction, priorities, and execution plans aligned with product roadmaps and business objectives
  • Drive high‑quality software delivery, ensuring performance, scalability, robustness, and usability
  • Partner closely with FPGA architecture, hardware engineering, and system teams to align software capabilities with next‑generation devices
  • Collaborate with product management and customer‑facing teams to incorporate user feedback and market requirements
  • Establish best practices for software design, code quality, testing, and CI/CD
  • Manage project planning, resourcing, risk mitigation, and milestone execution
  • Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, feedback, and career planning
  • Participate in technical reviews and contribute to architectural and strategic decisions
