Founding Product Designer

Urban Ridge Supplies•New York, NY
•$170,000 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Avallon builds AI agents that run the full insurance claims lifecycle, from intake to settlement. The company is hiring its first designer to own the customer-facing product experience as major insurance companies begin running real claims operations through it. The designer will shape the product from its current functional but engineer-built interface into a dependable system customers use throughout their workday. The role owns every customer-facing surface, from the claims workspace and review and exception flows to explanations of agent work and sources, and executive reporting. The founding designer will establish the product’s design language, research practice, design system, and quality bar, partnering closely with users and engineers to deliver usable workflows and measure their impact.

Requirements

  • 5+ years designing software, with end-to-end ownership.
  • A portfolio demonstrating depth in dense, technical software used by operators for much of the workday.
  • Willingness to observe people doing their jobs, identify confusion, and change designs based on what is learned rather than defend existing designs.
  • High agency and ability to work without assigned tasks or an established design team.
  • Based in NYC and excited to work in person.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to insurance, claims, healthcare, or another compliance-heavy operational domain.
  • Experience designing AI products and well-developed opinions about citations, confidence, and human-in-the-loop flows.
  • Brand and visual identity work.
  • Early-stage startup experience, especially as the first hire in a function.

Responsibilities

  • Own all customer-facing product surfaces, including the claims workspace, review and exception flows, agent work and source explanations, and executive reporting.
  • Define what good product design looks like and be accountable for ensuring that design quality is reflected in shipped work.
  • Turn the agent platform into a system people can work in, with appropriate information density, explicit states, and efficient interfaces for frequent tasks.
  • Design interaction models that let users understand what an agent did, why it did it, what it read, and where it was uncertain, and allow users to agree or intervene.
  • Translate customer problems surfaced by FDEs or customers into clear workflows and drive them with engineering from discovery through delivery.
  • Own usability and measure whether product solutions work for users.
  • Own UX instrumentation and analysis, combine behavioral data with user research, and test whether changes help users complete work with less effort.
  • Build the design system and the principles behind it, and help lead design as the function grows.

Benefits

  • Lunch and dinner provided every workday from local restaurants.
  • 100% of medical, dental, and vision insurance covered.
  • Generous monthly gym stipend.
  • Quarterly offsites.
