Forward Deployed Solution Engineer

Symmetry•San Francisco, NY

About The Position

This highly customer-facing role combines Solutions Engineering (pre-sales discovery, demos, and requirements gathering) with Forward Deployed Engineering (hands-on building, integration, and production delivery). The role sits within Symmetry’s Forward Deployed Compliance program, which aims to prove and unlock paid customer adoption of Symmetry’s AI capabilities, including STE MCP, Guides webhooks, and REST. The same person supports opportunities from technical discovery through implementation, avoiding a handoff between separate pre-sales and delivery teams. You will work directly with customer stakeholders, own technical discovery for opportunities, scope qualified engagements, and build production-ready agents and multi-agent systems. Solutions must handle real tax and jurisdiction data and be deployed in customers’ production environments. Success is measured by customer adoption and demonstrable outcomes such as hours saved, tickets deflected, and reduced risk. You will also develop reusable solution patterns, demos, runbooks, and deployment documentation, and relay feedback from sales and delivery to Product and go-to-market teams. Symmetry has a physical office in Scottsdale. Employees based in office locations are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2–3 days per week, or more depending on the role. When approved to work elsewhere, employees need a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection. The company expects regular and predictable attendance, whether in-office, hybrid, or remote.

  • Track record of shipping production systems in ambiguous, client-facing environments.
  • Demonstrable experience with REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, authentication patterns, data modeling, idempotency, and failure modes.

  • Experience with agentic workflows beyond prototypes, including MCP or function-calling patterns and evaluation and reliability practices.
  • Strong technical discovery skills and ability to navigate significant ambiguity.
  • Ability to scope technical solutions from ambiguous opportunities, build subscription business cases, and ship reusable solution patterns.
  • Ability to present to and influence audiences ranging from individual engineers to executive sponsors.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, commitment to the company’s mission, and empathy for clients whose compliance work is being automated.
  • Ability to build and debug solutions, take responsibility for customer outcomes, communicate proactively, flag risks early, and follow through.
  • Collaborative, low-ego, accountable communication and customer relationship skills.

Responsibilities

  • Give Sales an early technical feasibility assessment for ambiguous enterprise opportunities and scope compliance challenges after qualification.
  • Lead requirements gathering for complex, ambiguous opportunities and define the problem so Sales, Product, and Engineering can align.
  • Build working proofs of concept when feasibility needs to be demonstrated before a full build.
  • Translate deployments into business cases that justify subscriptions, including hours saved, risk reduced, and simplified compliance.
  • Embed with clients and personally build production code that runs compliance decisions.
  • Diagnose and resolve blockers such as data issues, jurisdiction mapping, and tax ID reconciliation.
  • Keep technical teams and business stakeholders aligned as requirements evolve, and communicate scope changes.
  • Deliver implementations and runbooks that Client Success can operate independently.
  • Feed structured insights from sales and implementation work, including infrastructure gaps, into product and go-to-market strategy.
  • Create reusable implementation playbooks, solution patterns, demo flows, and deployment documentation.
