Forward Deployed Solution Engineer

About The Position

The Forward Deployed Solution Engineer combines Solutions Engineering (pre-sales discovery, demos, and requirements gathering) with Forward Deployed Engineering (hands-on building, integration, and production delivery). The role sits within Symmetry’s Forward Deployed Compliance program, which aims to prove and enable paid adoption of Symmetry’s AI surface, STE MCP, Guides webhooks, and REST. The position owns opportunities from technical discovery through client deployment, with the same person helping qualify and demonstrate a solution and then building and delivering it. Deployments are expected to support paid adoption, make decisions on real work in production, and demonstrate measurable business value such as hours saved, tickets deflected, or reduced risk. This is a highly customer-facing position at the intersection of engineering, solution architecture, agentic AI, and customer delivery. The engineer works directly with technical and executive stakeholders, scopes ambiguous compliance challenges, builds proofs of concept when needed, and embeds with clients to create production-ready agents and multi-agent systems using real tax and jurisdiction data. The role also develops reusable solution patterns, demo flows, deployment documentation, and runbooks, and feeds lessons from sales and delivery back into product and go-to-market strategy. Symmetry has a physical office in Scottsdale. Employees based in office locations are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately two to three days per week, or more depending on the role. Work from another approved location requires a secure, reliable, consistent internet connection and regular, predictable attendance. Symmetry is part of Gusto and describes itself as a family-owned-and-operated, collaborative business. It is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations during the application process.

  • Experience with REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, authentication patterns, data modeling, idempotency, and failure modes.

  • Experience with agentic workflows beyond prototypes, including MCP or function-calling patterns and evaluation and reliability practices.
  • Strong technical discovery skills and ability to navigate substantial ambiguity.
  • Ability to scope technical solutions from ambiguous opportunities, build a business case that supports a subscription, and deliver reusable patterns.
  • Ability to present to and influence audiences ranging from individual engineers to executive sponsors.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, enthusiasm for the company’s mission, and empathy for clients whose compliance work is being automated.
  • Technical, customer-facing, independent, and fast-moving; willing to prototype and debug, take responsibility for customer outcomes, communicate proactively, flag risks, and follow through.

Responsibilities

  • Give Sales an early technical feasibility assessment for ambiguous Enterprise opportunities and own scoping of the compliance challenge after a deal is sales-qualified.
  • Gather requirements and define complex, ambiguous problems clearly enough for Sales, Product, and Engineering to align.
  • Build tailored working proofs of concept to demonstrate an agent’s feasibility when needed before a full build is committed.
  • Translate each deployment into a business case that explains the subscription value, including hours saved, risk reduced, and simplified compliance.
  • Embed with clients and write production code that runs compliance decisions, adapting the build approach to the needs of each engagement.
  • Diagnose and resolve blockers to production, including data issues, jurisdiction mapping, and tax ID reconciliation.
  • Keep technical teams and business stakeholders aligned as requirements evolve, and communicate scope changes.
  • Deliver the build and a runbook that Client Success can operate independently.
  • Feed structured insights from sales and implementation into product and go-to-market strategy, including infrastructure gaps.
  • Create reusable implementation playbooks, solution patterns, demo flows, and deployment documentation.
