Forward Deployed Engineer

Janus Henderson Investors•Denver, CO
•$145,000 - $180,000•Hybrid

About The Position

This is a business-facing engineering role within Janus Henderson’s firm-wide AI transformation. The Forward Deployed Engineer embeds with business users to identify workflow friction and turn business problems into AI and data solutions that reach production. Working alongside AI Enablement Partners, the engineer takes escalated needs from discovery through design, build, deployment, and ongoing support, reporting to the Principal Forward Deployed Engineer. The role spans sourcing internal and external data, building ingestion pipelines, curating business-focused data views, and making reusable data and capabilities available through Accio, the firm’s centralised MCP server, and Nexus, its agentic workspace. Work includes developing advanced investment capabilities, such as relative-value signal generation, and supporting their use beyond an initial investment desk. Solutions must be secure, scalable, governed, observable, and aligned with enterprise technology standards. The role uses Python, SQL, LLMs and agent frameworks, MCP, Azure AI Foundry through the AI Team’s model gateway, Snowflake, Azure, Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD. It is an individual-contributor position: engineers lead their own delivery engagements and may mentor less experienced engineers, but do not line-manage. The position may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. The stated base salary range is $145,000–$180,000.

Requirements

  • At least four years in a technical, business-facing engineering role, such as forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, consulting-side software engineering, or engineering embedded in a business unit; former technical founders are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills.
  • A track record of shipping production applications rather than prototypes.
  • Production experience with LLMs, including prompt and context engineering, agent development, evaluation, and deployment at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building agentic capability—such as MCP servers, tools, skills, or connectors—for other systems and agents to consume.
  • Experience building data pipelines from APIs and enterprise systems and modelling raw data into curated, business-facing views.
  • Working knowledge of a major cloud platform, ideally Azure, including CI/CD, containers, and infrastructure as code.
  • Excellent stakeholder skills and the ability to conduct business discovery and implement technical solutions.
  • High agency, comfort with ambiguity, and genuine interest in business problems as well as technology.
  • Experience in a regulated environment where governance, compliance, and data sensitivity affect solution design.
  • Willingness to adhere to the firm’s Investment Advisory Code of Ethics requirements related to personal securities activities, disclosures, and certifications, including requirements concerning past political contributions and political activities.
  • Ability to understand and abide by the firm’s regulatory obligations and applicable regulated-entity requirements and policies.

  • Knowledge of quantitative investment concepts such as fair value, relative value, signal generation, or portfolio construction.
  • Experience with Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric / OneLake, or comparable enterprise data platforms.
  • Experience with Azure AI Foundry, model gateways, inference routing, or production AI evaluation and observability.
  • TypeScript or another production programming language, and front-end experience for user-facing AI applications.

Responsibilities

  • Embed with portfolio managers, analysts, traders, marketing, sales, HR, and operations to understand workflows, data, and day-to-day friction.
  • Partner with AI Enablement Partners on escalated demand that business teams and citizen developers cannot deliver themselves.
  • Set realistic expectations about feasibility, delivery effort, and solution limitations.
  • Design, build, and productionise bespoke, higher-complexity AI solutions, owning them through live operation.
  • Prototype with business users and harden successful prototypes into production solutions.
  • Own solution architecture and design decisions, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with the enterprise core stack.
  • Take solutions through evaluation, observability, and AI governance checkpoints, and maintain their health after deployment.
  • Build advanced investment capability on Nexus and make it available across the firm.
  • Work with quantitative researchers and investment teams to turn models and signals from individual desks into supported, firm-wide capabilities.
  • Establish validation, monitoring, and reproducibility for signal outputs used by investment professionals, and help move citizen-developer workflows into production.
  • Source data through APIs, vendor feeds, and enterprise systems, and build ingestion pipelines.
  • Curate raw data into business-focused views and maintain data lineage, quality, and freshness.
  • Expose data and capabilities through Accio and as skills, tools, and connectors on Nexus for approved agents and applications.
  • Build reusable components instead of one-off integrations and provide patterns to AI Architecture and AI Engineering.
  • Co-build enterprise core-stack deliverables with Percepta and AI Engineering for transfer into business-as-usual.
  • Work with AI Security and AI Governance Implementation to meet security, data-privacy, and responsible-AI standards.
  • Keep current with LLM capabilities, agent patterns, and AI tooling, and share useful developments.
