Forward Deployed Engineer

Capgemini•New York, NY
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) work alongside client business and technology teams to discover and frame problems, define solutions, and remain accountable through build and value realization. The FDE independently owns a customer use case from discovery through production deployment and handoff, coordinating the delivery team and partnering with customer stakeholders, product teams, and engineering teams. The role combines technical execution with business and domain understanding to shape, build, and industrialize solutions that deliver measurable outcomes. The FDE leads client discovery and problem framing, defines success measures and value hypotheses, and shapes solution direction. They own solution architecture and critical-path implementation; deliver prototypes, proofs of value, and production-ready increments; and oversee AI-assisted work to ensure it meets engineering and business requirements. They design AI-powered workflows with appropriate human oversight and drive production readiness, adoption, and operational sustainability. The role also turns prototypes into reusable assets and playbooks, shares learning across the FDE capability, and ensures solutions are documented, supportable, measurable, and scalable. FDEs advise client leaders, orchestrate subject-matter experts, lead demonstrations and pilots, and enable operating-model changes required for adoption. The stated career path is to become a Principal ODE and ultimately a VP Distinguished Engineer or VP Business Partner.

Responsibilities

  • Lead discovery and problem framing with client stakeholders, distinguishing underlying problems from stated requests.
  • Define success measures, value hypotheses, and target outcomes before development begins.
  • Shape solution direction, including capability changes, workflow redesign, platform selection, architecture, and the role of AI in the operating model.
  • Own solution architecture and hands-on delivery of the critical path, setting engineering, business, and delivery standards for the workstream.
  • Deliver rapid prototypes, proofs of value, and production-ready increments to demonstrate value early and reduce decision risk.
  • Steer AI tooling and teams toward production-quality output and verify deliverables before release.
  • Verify generated output against engineering and business failure classes, including reliability, security, performance, compliance, regulatory requirements, operational feasibility, and business outcomes.
  • Design and implement AI-powered workflows as usable products, with appropriate human oversight.
  • Own specifications and acceptance criteria for the pod and its tooling, and sign off that delivered work meets the specification.
  • Design in production readiness, including reliability, security, compliance, observability, supportability, and operational sustainability.
  • Balance technical excellence, business value, user adoption, and regulatory obligations in solution design.
  • Turn prototypes into reusable assets, playbooks, patterns, and accelerators, and hand them off cleanly to delivery or managed services.
  • Share client learning across the wider FDE capability and ensure solutions are documented, supportable, measurable, and scalable.
  • Own outcomes through adoption; lead client demonstrations and pilots and drive usage among real users.
  • Orchestrate subject-matter experts, secure the right expertise when needed, and support transition into delivery and managed services.
  • Advise client managers and directors as a trusted partner across business and technology domains.
  • Design and enable required operating-model changes, including process redesign, capability mapping, workflow transformation, organizational impact, and technology adoption.
  • Bring expertise in one or more relevant areas, such as AI and agentic systems, software engineering, data and platform engineering, business architecture, operating-model transformation, workflow redesign, or digital product delivery.

Benefits

  • Paid time off: 12–25 vacation days depending on employee grade, plus company-paid holidays, personal days, and sick leave.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage (or provincial healthcare coordination in Canada).
  • Retirement savings plans, such as 401(k) in the U.S. or RRSP in Canada.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Employee assistance programs.
  • Other benefits as provided by local policy and eligibility.
  • The role may be eligible for variable incentives, bonuses, or commissions, depending on position and applicable laws.
