About The Position

Wolters Kluwer Health is building on its foundation of trusted clinical decision support by developing outcome-focused solutions that integrate clinical content, data, AI, and workflow. The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a hands-on, product-minded engineer who collaborates with strategic customers and internal teams to identify high-value problems, create working solutions, validate their impact, and transform repeatable patterns into scalable capabilities for WK Health. This role is embedded within the product, reporting to Technology and working closely with Product. The FDE will gain insights from real customer environments, accelerate the adoption of WK Health platforms, and influence reusable product direction across the Health division, including AI-driven capabilities that leverage the momentum of their Expert AI propositions. The FDE is responsible for the entire lifecycle from customer problem identification to technical proof, measured outcomes, and product feedback, building practical solutions while ensuring safety, security, quality, and long-term maintainability. While initially without direct reports, the role may involve leading cross-functional virtual squads or technical workstreams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Health Informatics, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years in software engineering, customer-facing engineering, solution architecture, technical product management, or related product technology roles.
  • Production-quality software experience in enterprise and/or regulated environments.
  • Healthcare technology experience across clinical workflows, EHR/payer/pharmacy systems, healthcare data platforms, or digital health (e.g., HL7 FHIR, SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks, RxNorm, SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD-10, CPT, NDC, Integration with Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH, Athenahealth, payer platforms).
  • Experience with modern software delivery involving AI/GenAI, LLMs, RAG, agentic workflows, AI evaluation, prompt/retrieval testing, or responsible AI governance.
  • Ability to translate customer or stakeholder problems into requirements, prototypes, working software, and measurable outcomes.
  • Comfort operating across product, technology, commercial, clinical, security, and customer teams.
  • Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, C#, Go, or comparable languages; mobile development is a plus.
  • Resourceful problem-solving skills: ability to move quickly from an unclear problem to a practical solution while preserving a path to scale and supportability.
  • Product mindset: prioritize outcomes, adoption, reuse, and roadmap learning over one-off delivery.
  • Low-ego collaboration: ability to constructively challenge teams, share credit, and focus on customer and team success.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred but not required.
  • Mobile development is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Discover and Frame Outcomes: Collaborate with customer executives, clinical leaders, informaticists, pharmacists, IT/data teams, and end users to understand workflows, constraints, decision points, and adoption barriers. Translate ambiguous needs into outcome hypotheses, use cases, success metrics, acceptance criteria, prototypes, and implementation options focused on measurable customer value.
  • Build, Integrate, and Validate: Design, code, integrate, test, and deploy prototypes and product extensions using WK Health assets, APIs, data, AI capabilities, and platform services. Apply healthcare integration patterns such as HL7 FHIR, SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks, secure APIs, and cloud-native approaches. Utilize modern engineering practices including Spec Driven Development, automated testing, observability, secure SDLC, and AI-assisted or agentic development with human accountability.
  • Make Field Learning Reusable: Design for reuse by default, converting field-built patterns into APIs, connectors, reference architectures, templates, evaluation harnesses, playbooks, and input for the product backlog. Collaborate with Product and Engineering to determine which patterns should become platform capabilities, packaged solutions, roadmap priorities, or retired one-off solutions.
  • Navigate Responsibly: Build AI-enabled workflows that are grounded in trusted content, clear user intent, human oversight, auditability, and post-deployment monitoring. Partner with clinical, editorial, security, privacy, legal, and compliance teams to ensure solutions align with WK responsible AI principles, healthcare safety, and data governance expectations. Foster alignment across WK and customer teams through clarity, humility, curiosity, and sound judgment, communicating tradeoffs and advocating for impact without creating unsupported customization or unmanaged risk.
