About The Position

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is seeking three Technicians to assist with monitoring forested areas and identifying sites at risk for high-intensity or crown fire. This role is part of GBI's Ecological Monitoring Program, which provides hands-on experience in botanical, soil, and rangeland surveys. The program focuses on collecting quantitative data to assess the status, condition, and trends of natural resources. Technicians will work with GBI, Lake County, LCRI, and USFS staff, following protocols like FIREMON to document fire effects, assess ecosystem damage, and evaluate potential treatments. This position offers valuable experience in executing monitoring protocols, enhancing employment success in natural resource management.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to read, interpret and navigate using topographic maps.
Experience safely operating 4WD trucks on paved and unpaved roads, often in remote areas on unimproved roads.
Experience navigating and collecting coordinates with hand-held GPS units.
Experience creating maps and performing basic functions with GIS software (ArcMap).
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).
Valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record.
Ability to work productively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to communicate effectively with team members, agency staff, and a diverse public.
Ability to accurately complete administrative tasks on time (e.g., timesheet, paperwork, etc.).
Excellent organizational skills.
Willingness to work irregular hours (e.g., early mornings, late nights).
Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.

Nice To Haves

Experience conducting plant surveys using various monitoring protocols, including forest inventory and monitoring protocols, photo plots, and site observations.
Experience with data entry and management.
Experience with technical writing and/or producing written project summary reports.
Familiarity with native and invasive plants of the sampling area and associated natural resource issues.
Familiarity with best practices for field safety and Leave No Trace principles.

Responsibilities

Follow established field protocols to perform vegetation sampling and field data collection at new sampling plots.
Document fire effects, assess ecosystem damage, and appraise potential for future treatments.
Employing FIREMON and other protocols including: Plot Description (PD), Tree Data (TD), Fuel Load (FL), Species Cover (SC), Cover/Frequency (CF), Line Intercept (LI), Density (DE), Point Intercept (PO), Rare Species (RS), and Composite Burn Index (BI).
Conduct Aspen and Invasive monitoring protocols.
Collect vegetation data (including tree canopy data, tree characteristics, seedling/ sapling characteristics, fuels, and vegetation).
Collect soil data (including depth, moisture, and temperature).
Maintain safety awareness and practices.
Perform extensive 4x4 driving on unmaintained roads.
Navigate off-trail to sampling sites.
Establish sampling plots and transects.
Communicate regularly with GBI support staff and agency staff.
Participate in GBI and agency trainings.
Enter data on paper datasheets and excel.
Identify plants to species using dichotomous keys.
Employ extensive QA/QC data checks.
