About The Position

This is an entry-level food service position involving simple, routine manual work preparing and serving food in a cafeteria or other dining area. The role also includes cleaning kitchen equipment and utensils, as well as reusable eating utensils, glassware, and china. Work is performed under the direct and close supervision of a higher-ranking food service employee. Supervising others is not a responsibility of this position. Related work may be assigned as required.

Requirements

There are no education or experience qualifications for this position.
Working knowledge of balanced diet principles, National School Lunch Program regulations, Department of Health requirements, portion control, food preparation and serving methods, safe kitchen equipment operation, care of dining and kitchen items, industrial dishwashers and detergents, and cleaning supplies.
Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.
Ability to prepare and serve food with proper regard for sanitary principles.
Ability to receive and make correct change.
Ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, and other diners.
Willingness to perform routine, low-skill work; dependability; and health commensurate with the demands of the position.
For positions designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a State Education Department employment clearance is required.

Responsibilities

Prepare ingredients for salads, sandwiches, and cold plates.
Portion and garnish desserts, salads, and fruits for serving.
Trim, wash, and prepare vegetables.
Set up serving lines with condiments, hot and cold foods, and table service items.
Serve food from a steam table or food line in a cafeteria-style operation.
Wash and sanitize pots, pans, and utensils.
Clean and dry silverware, china, and glassware.
Fill sugar bowls, salt and pepper shakers, napkin holders, and holders for utensils and straws.
Clean dining tables of dirty dishes and trays when lunchroom aides are absent.
Wash and sanitize dining room tables, chairs, and trays when lunchroom aides are absent.
Operate kitchen appliances and equipment.
Advise students about well-balanced meals.
Clean the kitchen and dining room area.
Serve as cashier on the student-faculty food service line.
