Food Service Associate - Butcher Shop
About The Position
Walden Local is seeking a skilled Food Service Associate for its South End butcher shop in Boston. The role is a hands-on position in a traditional, old-school shop, working directly with products from delivery through customer service. It involves whole-animal butchery, custom cuts, physically receiving and moving product, and helping maintain day-to-day shop operations. The schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., for 40–45 hours per week. The associate will use professional butchery tools and perform physically demanding work, including moving beef quarters weighing up to 250 pounds. They will also educate customers about the meat industry, Walden’s mission, and meat cuts; promote the home delivery meat share program; and support inventory planning. Requirements
- Ability to lift and move beef quarters weighing up to 250 pounds.
- Stamina to repeatedly move up to 50 pounds throughout a standard shift.
- At least 2 years of customer-centric work experience for a premium brand.
- Strong interest in learning or expanding skills with butchery tools, including knives and saws, and whole-animal breakdown.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Team-oriented attitude.
- Passion for sustainable agriculture and willingness to help where needed.

Responsibilities
- Perform whole-animal butchery and provide custom cuts using tools such as knives and bone saws.
- Receive and move product from delivery trucks, including lifting beef quarters onto wheeled carts and then onto butcher blocks or hanging hooks.
- Provide excellent customer service and educate customers about the meat industry, Walden’s mission, and specific cuts.
- Safely handle products and maintain shop cleanliness and safety.
- Prepare the store for opening and closing.
- Promote the Walden home delivery meat share program.
- Manage inventory planning.
