About The Position

The Food Service Assistant supports meal preparation and food service at Gordon Health & Rehab, a non-profit, mission-driven organization. The role assists the cook with preparing meals, desserts, snacks, salads, and between-meal nourishment; serves food and beverages to patients; and provides tray-line service in accordance with diet orders and procedural guidelines. The assistant also cleans and sanitizes kitchen areas, dishes, equipment, and dining spaces; monitors and records food-storage and dishwashing temperatures; checks stock and chemical levels; and stores food and supplies appropriately. The position requires courteous communication with associates, patients, families, and visitors, along with compliance with infection-control policies and established procedures. The role is full-time, with starting pay of $15.16 per hour and weekly pay.

Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively to groups of customers or associates.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and use common-sense reasoning to address problems in standardized situations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including regularly sitting, talking, or hearing; frequently walking, handling or feeling objects, and reaching; and occasionally standing.
Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with associates, patients, family members, and visitors.

Responsibilities

Assist the cook with preparing meals, desserts, snacks, salads, and other dishes.
Prepare between-meal nourishment such as sandwiches and serve nourishments according to procedures.
Carry trays to patients, serve patients food and beverages, and take meals to patients in the dining area.
Pour and serve juice, milk, water, tea, and other beverages; make coffee or tea as requested.
Set up the tray line and perform tray-line service, following diet orders and NPO diet orders.
Offer menu substitutions and record them according to procedural guidelines.
Clean dining tables after meals and clean the work area, including sweeping and mopping.
Scrape and wash dishes, pots, and pans; operate the dish machine and garbage disposal.
Clean kitchen equipment, including carts, tables, counters, ice machine, blender, mixer, meat slicer, freezer, refrigerator, stove, oven, steamer, and other listed equipment.
Remove kitchen garbage and hose out garbage containers.
Record freezer and walk-in refrigerator temperatures, and check and record water temperatures for dishwashing and pot-and-pan sinks.
Check dishwasher sanitizer with test strips; check chemical levels and replace chemicals as needed.
Check stock, put away stock appropriately, store cleaning materials properly, and store leftovers and opened food correctly.
Follow standardized recipes and use serving equipment such as ladles, spoons, and scoops.
Follow procedures for serving associate meals and comply with infection-control policies.
Communicate in a warm, friendly, helpful, and professional manner with associates, patients, family members, and visitors; respond to concerns and answer questions when appropriate.
Promote the System's image and reputation through servant leadership and direct, open communication.
Contribute to committees, workgroups, project management, and other collaborative efforts.
Perform other duties as necessary to ensure the success of the System.
