About The Position
The Arizona Department of Agriculture is recruiting a full-time Food Product Standardization Inspector 2 for its Citrus, Fruit and Vegetable program. The position is based at the Yuma office and works under general supervision from the Yuma Officer in Charge. It conducts fresh-produce quality-grade inspections in Yuma and surrounding areas, requiring in-state travel and use of a state or personal vehicle for state business. The inspector samples and inspects fresh produce and issues certificates using official USDA grade standards and Arizona requirements. The role also responds to industry questions about produce quality and may include other assigned duties. Work may involve varied climatic conditions and lifting up to 50 pounds continuously.
Requirements
- Knowledge of basic math calculations.
- Knowledge of USDA guidelines for sample selection and grading procedures.
- Ability to interpret written instructions, rules, and regulations.
- Knowledge of USDA standards for fresh fruit, vegetables, and nuts.
- Skill using a calculator and basic computer.
- Skill interpreting and applying U.S. Grade Standards and inspection handbook instructions.
- Handwriting skills and attention to detail.
- Consistent and unbiased judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to follow a complex and flexible work schedule.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with industry workers.
- Ability to adapt to varied climatic working conditions, including hot, cold, and windy conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds continuously.
- In-state travel is required.
- A current, valid, class-appropriate driver's license is required for employees operating a motor vehicle on State business; applicable training and driving-record requirements apply.
- Employees using a personally owned vehicle for State business must maintain the statutorily required liability insurance.
- Successfully pass background and reference checks.
- Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Responsibilities
- Sample and inspect products and issue certificates for shipping-point inspections and imported products using official USDA grade standards to determine grade and condition.
- Sample and inspect products and issue certificates according to State of Arizona requirements to determine grade and condition.
- Respond to industry technical questions about produce by listening, asking questions, and providing information, suggestions, or referrals as needed.
- Drive a state vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct state business.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
