About The Position

Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Food Service Helper, as part of a team, provides support to the operation of the kitchen and food/beverage counter at The Mustard Seed, by assisting with sorting and organizing food donations, food preparation and cleaning activities. Maintaining Occupational Health & Safety Standards is also a key part of this role.

Requirements

  • Customer service experience
  • Must be able to handle a knife and have basic kitchen skills (operating oven, dishwasher, other appliances)
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good problem-solving and quick decision-making skills; ability to think “on-your-feet”
  • Ability to recognize and maintain appropriate boundaries with co-workers, volunteers and guests
  • High level of confidentiality, especially pertaining to guests’ information
  • Willingness to participate in any essential training required by The Mustard Seed
  • Desire to serve in a Christian ministry
  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Not a member of the Immediate Family of the Employer or a member of the Immediate Family of an officer or director of the Employer
  • International students are not eligible participants
  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a kitchen environment is considered an asset
  • Food safety certification is considered a strong asset

Responsibilities

  • Sort and organize of food donations
  • Assist with packaging assorted pastries, baked items and other food as required
  • Assist with serving guests snacks, beverages, coffee, and warming sandwiches
  • Perform food preparation: peeling potatoes, carrots and chopping vegetables
  • Assist with bagging items for various programs such as School Lunch Program, Food Depot, Men’s Kitchen and other food programming.
  • Ensure pantry, coolers, freezers, and fridges are kept clean and organized
  • Wash and store dishes
  • Clean and keep kitchen organized
  • Work alongside and assist with volunteers as required
  • Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Participate in all required training
