About The Position

The Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) is a non-profit charitable organization working in Alberta since 1995 to strengthen community capacity and build healthier and stronger communities. The AHC’s objective is to improve the lives of individuals and communities in which they live through provision of public education and other capacity building initiatives to enable them to enhance their own lives. AHC’s Small Centres, Camrose, Alberta, is looking for a motivated, personable candidate to lead our children and youth summer programming in July and August. This Summer Camp Counsellor will host camps for immigrant and refugee children in Bonnyville, Alberta, and Cold Lake, Alberta on alternating weeks. The Summer Camp Counsellor will work with children and youth (aged 7 – 15) from immigrant families in a day camp setting. The Counsellor will need to plan and facilitate activities for children and youth.

Requirements

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Experience working with children and youth, especially working with new immigrants
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong leadership skills and possess cultural sensitivity
  • Good communication skills
  • Client must live near Bonnyville or Cold Lake. Please state the address where you will be living in July and August on your cover letter.
  • If selected, a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector check will be required as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Speak other languages than English is an asset
  • Having a Class 5 drivers’ license and own vehicle is an asset. Please state in your cover letter if you have a drivers’ license and access to a vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and hosting interactive group activities for children and youth.
  • Preparing program supplies, organizing and delivering them to program sites, and ensuring they are ready for scheduled activities.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of program participants during activities by following set procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrating professionalism in interactions with all stakeholders, including parents, partners, guest facilitators, and other staff.
  • Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
