About The Position

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is hiring experienced or senior engineers for its 787 Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Engineering team in North Charleston, South Carolina. Engineers will support one or more disciplines, including Primary Flight Control Systems, High Lift Systems, Flight Control Electronics, Hydraulic Systems, Landing Gear Actuation and Steering Systems, and Brake Control Systems. The work involves designing, analyzing, testing, certifying, and supporting flight-control and mechanical-hydraulic systems and components for the 787 family, as well as supporting production and fleet operations. The role calls for engineers who can perform hand calculations to check computational analyses, conduct multivariable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and define system/component interface requirements. Engineers are expected to communicate progress clearly, set project objectives and schedules, and execute engineering work on time. Relevant technical areas include system controls, mechanical and electrical systems, systems modeling, electromechanical actuation, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, aircraft certification, and model correlation. Tools and programming experience may include Cameo, MATLAB/Simulink, MATLAB, C++, Python, Easy5, Adams, and Simscape. The position requires substantial cross-functional coordination with Boeing teams, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies. It also includes resolving production and fleet issues and contributing to continued operational safety assessments. The position is Shift 1 and offers relocation subject to candidate eligibility. U.S. export-control compliance requires the candidate to be a U.S. Person. Boeing will not sponsor employment visas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, with a focus in Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Material Sciences; the posting also lists a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Level 3: at least 5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience working in an engineering field.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%.
  • Successful completion of Boeing's Conflict of Interest assessment process.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person, as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to establish project goals and objectives, develop schedules, and execute engineering work on time.

Nice To Haves

  • Level 4: at least 9 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience mentoring and developing others.
  • At least 3 years of experience with mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience in an aerospace-related role.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with 3D visualization toolsets.
  • At least 5 years of experience with component, system, or airplane FAA/EASA certification.
  • At least 5 years of experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, procedures, and specifications.
  • At least 5 years of experience in flight-controls or mechanical-hydraulic systems engineering roles.
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated project-management skills.
  • Technical knowledge in system controls, mechanical systems, electrical systems, systems modeling, electromechanical actuation, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, aircraft certification, or model correlation from data to analysis tools.
  • Experience with Cameo, MATLAB/Simulink, scripting in MATLAB, C++, or Python, and/or physical modeling tools such as Easy5, Adams, or Simscape.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve airplane-level requirements into system-level requirements and system-level requirements into component requirements, using time- and cost-efficient validation methods.
  • Participate in and lead system, component, and detail design efforts, documenting work and producing manufacturable specifications and drawings within schedule and cost constraints.
  • Plan and conduct system- and component-level validation analyses and tests, including test planning, test rigs, monitoring, reporting, supplier test report review, failure analysis, and mitigation.
  • Participate in and lead system, component, and detail certification efforts, preparing certification artifacts such as system safety analyses, failure modes and effects analyses, and fault tree analyses; demonstrate traceability to regulatory requirements and resolve regulatory conflicts.
  • Support production by resolving build problems at Boeing and supplier facilities, improving build accuracy, production rate, and safety, and addressing rejections, functional test failures, and flight squawks.
  • Support global fleet operations by advising on airline and regulator queries, leading or participating in Service Related Problem resolution, and analyzing reported flight incidents for Safety Review Board recommendations regarding Continued Operational Safety Program determinations.
  • Coordinate across functions and organizations, including manufacturing, avionics, crew operations, airplane safety, aerodynamics, supply chain management, BCA systems software, suppliers, airline customers, and regulators.
  • Gather, define, and document system-level requirements for flight-control and mechanical-hydraulic systems and resolve requirement conflicts.
  • Perform and document mechanical systems analysis and design to validate or assess system designs and models.
  • Develop solutions and issue dispositions to support customer satisfaction.
  • Develop system and subsystem architecture alternatives to meet requirements and objectives.
  • Compare alternatives through trade studies and converge on preferred configurations, including defining and executing system simulations and development test programs.
  • Establish hand calculations to spot-check computational analysis, perform multivariable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and develop system/component interface requirements.
  • Develop project goals and objectives, create project schedules, communicate progress, and execute engineering work on time.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Relocation assistance based on candidate eligibility.
