About The Position

The Boeing Company is hiring an Associate Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer for its 787 Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Engineering team in North Charleston, South Carolina. The role supports one or more sub-teams: Primary Flight Control Systems, High Lift Systems, Flight Control Electronics, Hydraulic Systems, Landing Gear Actuation and Steering Systems, or Brake Control Systems. The engineer designs, analyzes, tests, certifies, and supports flight-control and mechanical-hydraulic systems and components for the 787 family of aircraft, as well as production and fleet operations. Components may include linear and rotary mechanical or hydraulic actuators, electro-mechanical and hydraulic valves, sensors, gearboxes, torque tubes, and electronic control units. The engineer is expected to perform hand calculations to check computational analyses, conduct multi-variable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and establish system/component interface requirements. The role also involves communicating progress to a broad audience, defining project objectives and schedules, and executing engineering work on time. Work requires coordination with internal Boeing teams, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies. The position supports requirements definition and conflict resolution; system, component, and detail design; validation analysis and testing; certification; production problem resolution and design improvements; and global fleet operations. Engineers may consult on airline and regulator inquiries, lead service-related problem resolution, and analyze reported flight incidents for safety review. They develop and document system requirements, analyze mechanical-system designs and models, develop solutions to issues, create architecture alternatives, compare configurations through trade studies, and execute simulations and development test programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Material Sciences.
  • At least 2 years of related work experience.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working in an engineering field.
  • At least 1 year of experience with mechanical systems.
  • Successful candidates must satisfy the Company's Conflict of Interest assessment process.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements; a U.S. Person as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62 is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring and developing others.
  • Technical knowledge in one or more of system controls, mechanical systems, electrical systems, systems modeling, electro-mechanical actuation, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, or aircraft certification.
  • Experience with model correlation from data to analysis tools.
  • Experience with Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, scripting languages such as Matlab, C++, or Python, and/or physical modeling tools such as Easy5, Adams, or Simscape.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve airplane-level requirements into system-level requirements and system-level requirements into component requirements using time- and cost-efficient validation methods.
  • Participate in system, component, and detail design, documenting work and producing specifications and drawings designed to be error-free and readily manufactured within schedule and cost constraints.
  • Participate in system- and component-level validation analysis and testing, including test planning, test rigs, monitoring, report authorship, supplier test report review and approval, test failure analysis, and mitigation.
  • Participate in system, component, and detail certification, including preparing system safety analyses, failure modes and effects analyses, and fault tree analyses; demonstrating traceability to regulatory requirements; and resolving regulatory conflicts.
  • Support production by resolving build problems at Boeing and supplier facilities, implementing design improvements to build accuracy, build rate, and production-line safety, and resolving rejections, functional test failures, and flight squawks.
  • Support global fleet operations by consulting on airline and regulator queries, participating in and leading service-related problem resolution, and analyzing flight incidents to provide recommendations to the Safety Review Board for Continued Operational Safety Program determinations.
  • Coordinate across manufacturing, avionics, crew operations, airplane safety, aerodynamics, supply chain management, BCA systems software, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Gather, define, and document system-level requirements for flight-control and mechanical-hydraulic requirements definition, and resolve requirement conflicts.
  • Perform and document analysis and design of mechanical systems to validate or assess system designs or models.
  • Develop solutions and disposition issues to assure customer satisfaction.
  • Develop system and subsystem architecture alternatives to meet requirements and objectives.
  • Analyze and compare alternatives through trade studies, including defining and executing system simulations and development test programs.
  • Establish hand calculations to spot-check computational analysis, perform multi-variable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and develop system/component interface requirements.
  • Communicate progress to a wide audience, establish project goals and objectives, develop project schedules, and execute engineering work on time.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Relocation assistance based on candidate eligibility.
